I recently argued about this with a US American who consistently called Latinos "Spanish", so I wonder...
Do you or would you call Hispanics/Latinos/South Americans "Spanish"?

I know it's a privilege that I've never had to face this as bad as it is right now.
But how the fuck do people just get up day after day when the world feels like it just keeps getting darker and crueler and there's nothing stopping it.
I know you just do, and I will.
but man, celebrating tomorrow in this disaster country feels so fucking dystopian and I do not understand the people who sincerely do it right now
How can you flat out say you don’t want your children to learn about Martin Luther King, or how to manage their mental health during and after a global pandemic, and think that you’re a good guy defending freedom. I know I know I know but do the so-called “moms for liberty” even hear themselves
Anyway vote in your goddamn school board elections because these guys are organized as hell and care almost exclusively about local politics and that’s how they’re going to win
Thursday Thoughts: Consequences
I’m writing this on Wednesday, January 6, 2021. I’m watching CNN, and I’m rolling my eyes every time someone says that they’re shocked.
This is upsetting, yes. But it is not shocking. We’re seeing the direct result of the last decade of politics and news reporting. This is the culmination of years of storytelling.
It feels like everyone just conveniently forgot that the things you say and the stories you tell actually have an impact in the world. When you give lies and conspiracy theories a platform, there will be an impact. When you pretend that every issue is a debate with two equally good, just, and valid sides, there will be an impact. When you let people get away with saying and doing unspeakable things, and all you can say is, “How can he think he can get away with this?” as you let him get away with it, there will be an impact. We are now seeing that impact. The world we live in now – this is the consequence.
We need to stop being shocked. We need to stop saying that this is unheard of, because it’s happening, and therefore we are hearing of it. We need to stop saying that this is unexpected or unreasonable, because it is the direct consequence of years of fearmongering, of prioritizing monetary gain – getting clicks and views, or getting re-elected – over serving our democracy. And we need to get back to the work of serving our democracy.
We are what we do. We are not our ideals, we are not our hopes and dreams, we are not our past statements – we are what we do. And we need to do better.
So one of my friends has “just gotten into politics” and he was telling me about this other friend of his who is going to vote for Trump because the only issue he cares about is Israel and Trump is “pro-Israel”
And I was like... dude... saying Trump is “pro-Israel” is like saying someone who wants you to eat so much cake that you die is “pro-dessert”
Trump doesn’t care about us. He wants to impress his evangelical base, who want Jews to go to Israel and kickstart the end of the world.
Ignoring the fact that this guy thinks he can afford to be a one issue voter... his one issue has flaws
Some very late-night thoughts about the Stenza - based on only two episodes of Doctor Who, and what little that’s been said about them there, so it’s very likely that all this will be jossed soon enough...
I think the Stenza are a new generation’s Daleks. A more appropriate evil for today than the Daleks.
The Stenza are a new villain, and totally unknown to the Doctor, apparently, but instantly strike her (and us) as despicable - they don’t just kill, they take trophies and display them on their own skin. They use other living things as pawns, selecting a random human to be hunted and kept on display, again as a trophy, this is the polar opposite of the Doctor’s regard for life, she sees every single life as important and worth jumping off a crane for, the Stenza see some, possibly most, other lives as worth very little at all except as a conquest.
And now we know that they take over worlds, that they force scientists to create new and more terrible ways to torture and kill, that they “cleanse” populations.
They’re Nazis, basically. The Daleks were supposed to be Nazis, too.
But the Daleks fit an older view of a Nazi. The idea that there’s something inherent to that group. The kind of idea that’s why Milgram did his experiment, to try to prove that Germans were somehow uniquely predisposed to going along with genocide. That’s what a Dalek is - it was MADE to hate and kill. It doesn’t really believe anything, it was born not to.
And they’re not really scary anymore? Not to me at least. I know that originally people hid behind their couches for the Daleks, but they’re just... killing machines. They blow stuff up and get blown up. They’re dangerous, certainly, but they’re too much a charicature. They’re funny. They’re evil villains who do evil, punching bags for Team TARDIS. I don’t fear them like I’d fear someone real and malicious.
But Tim Shaw? Or whatever the heck his name was? He started out a faceless metal thing, like a Dalek, and then he took off the helmet. Then we looked him in the eye. And he explained himself, why he was doing what he was doing, and we realized that he had reasoning, he had beliefs, he was a cheater, he was a person, an awful, malicious person, but a person. And we can imagine the kind of society, the kind of history, that would turn any person into someone who sees other kinds of life as lesser, as conquests.
Because those people are all around us now. Who doesn’t know a man who sees women as conquests? (And if you think you don’t, and you’re in the USA and paying any attention to the news, you do.) The New York Times writes think pieces about how strange it is that a Nazi could go grocery shopping and watch comedy TV. Strange, is it, that Nazis eat normal cereal, and not Hatred-O’s?
Daleks eat hatred-o’s. Stenza eat cereal.
So the Stenza are scarier to me than the Daleks ever were, and I doubt I’m alone here.
This may have stopped making sense at some point, I’m dead tired.
