❛ i know , hiccup . ❜ it’s one of the things she admires most about him , she supposes — he is STRONG in ways astrid has not seen in many . the pressure to be perfect is there , perhaps — but his sense of SELF overcomes . hiccup follows his heart , more than anyone she has ever known . he’s always been this way , and she prays to some distant gods that he never changes .
nevertheless — he may not care , but she does . forward thinkers were not always well - received ; once upon a time , she had ALSO casted metaphorical stones . kept her distance from his difference . a foolish girl , she’d been . now , she comes to rest a palm on his shoulder , a gesture of comfort , of constant friendship . support . ❛ and i’m not saying you have to . but it’s just a dinner . you’ll talk to some people , laugh with some others . just a few hours . they’ll be less likely to gossip if you just met with them a little , yeah ? ❜

What were astrid's thoughts on hiccup in the first film and how /exactly/ have they changed since then? (Btw it doesn't have to include the "romance" aspect if it doesn't apply to your portrayal!)
send me questions you have about my character!
my thoughts on this are kinda all over the place, so please bear with me !!! i’ll try to make all of my word vomit make sense rip
OKAY SO… first movie… she didn’t… really care about him? or rather, she was relatively neutral about him- she didn’t dislike him nor necessarily like him. she knew who he was, knew he assisted with gobber, && knew that a lot of the times he was a bit of a screwup, but thats about it ( && i’m not saying that she knows this because she paid special attention to him, more so because astrid is pretty observant ). astrid in the first movie was more focused on training/dragon hunting, fighting for honor && being the best viking she could be, so she didn’t really have much of a relationship with ANYONE- this of course, including hiccup.
but when she was around hiccup, i liked to believe she didn’t mind his company- for the most part that is. i wouldn’t say she favored hiccup at ALL out of the other teens, but she knew he was nice, if not a bit awkward. she did however let herself get TREMENDOUSLY frustrated with him because he kept!!! fucking things up! she had her job && he had his, she could do her part for berk just fine but why couldn’t he? for her, astrid’s path was so so so clear && set out before her, she could walk her path just fine, && she simply couldn’t understand why hiccup couldn’t walk his own. it’s even MORE apparent in the scene where they’re all in dragon training, && astrid goes OFF after a close encounter with a nadder. she’s FURIOUS that his hesitation, && what she sees as him playing around, could’ve potentially gotten them killed- because astrid took her training very very seriously.
&& he didn’t ( or so she believed ). it pissed her off- what she saw as his cowardice && hesitation REALLY got under her skin more than she was willing to admit.
however, this all changes after hiccup takes her on a sky ride with toothless. now astrid is not someone who can easily be swept off her feet, && i don’t believe that her feelings were so easily shifted from platonic to SLIGHT romantic intentions- but thats another question because this post will get too damn long.
BUT, astrid went from seeing hiccup as being this awkward, slightly annoying kid who had no idea what he was doing, to being someone she greatly respected. she tells him that everyone else would’ve killed that dragon, but why didn’t you? && it’s because he couldn’t!!! because he saw himself in toothless’ eyes && he couldn’t bring himself to kill a dragon.
he did what NO ONE ELSE in berk did- he thought about it, he tried different approaches- he may not have asked to be different from his people, but he is. he saw something beautiful in those dragons that no one else would allow themselves to see, && he gave toothless mercy because... how could he kill a defenseless creature?
&& he was even able to prove astrid wrong, he showed her with toothless that dragons aren’t these demonic creatures that kill for fun- that they’re simply these gentle beasts that happen to live nearby, that they aren’t necessarily evil, but simply trying to survive against something they cannot run away from. that they’re SCARED.
&& then he shows her his bravery, his willingness to protect his friends && the dragons that are so misunderstood despite the fact that his father, && all of berk wish to find the dragon hideout && destroy it. he stands up for the RIGHT REASON to her... && she accepts it. he’s willing to put himself on the line to show his people that they were WRONG, && that no one needs to die anymore, no humans OR dragons.
hiccup was standing up for his beliefs, && standing up for the right reasons. how could she NOT admire him for that? respect him?
because if she had been in his shoes, she knows she would’ve killed toothless.
&& of course thats only solidified even more when he goes to fight && kill the dragon that is not only threatening his people, but has been threatening all those other dragons for GODS KNOW how long. he’s willing to risk his life to protect his people && the dragons, he fought for what was right to the END
even though it cost him something.
astrid... just has so much love && respect for who hiccup is as a person, as a friend, && as a protector of berk. he did something no one else was able to pull off. && her respect only continues to grow for him into the second movie.
i mean... astrid NEVER questions that hiccup is able to be chief- because she KNOWS he can do it. if she had her doubts she would’ve vocalized them, but thats just how much she believes in hiccup, && just how much she trusts him to always do the right thing for his people. sure he may still be a coward at times && run away, but at the end of the day, she always believes that he has the ability to do the right thing.
❝ hey man — you SURE he don't bite or nothin’ ? ❞ COUNTLESS times before had hiccup tried vigorously to get jim closer and closer to his companion - however much he liked animals , dragons were a different story. ❝ because ... toothless or not , shit's scary man. ❞
