there’s no place like durmstrang. although some may call its utilitarian medieval buildings ugly, you think that it has its own charm – it resembles something out of a story that’s already dead, something so old that time doesn’t even have a name for it.
you love the stirring silence of it, the sound of trees growing in the background, the soft lapping of the moat around the main campus, the rustling of the heavy red robes of serious students, walking briskly to their next class.
you love the crackling in its air, the pure magic that you have not yet learn to control, the treasure that is just beyond the tips of your fingers. you love the heavy, unsaid spells resting like dew between the lips of promising students. you love the suspense between two classes.
you love the static feeling it evokes in you, over-warm with exposure to so many fantastic things, your interests constantly jumbling together, mixing altogether like some sort of primordial alchemy from which the first wizard arose. you love how it doesn’t define anything – how it allows you to be just about anything. there’s no strict ‘herbology,’ ‘potions’, ‘transfiguration’, ‘divination’ or any nonsense of that sort – everything is connected to everything else, and borders are always blurred. why bother trying to separate something that has inevitably grown together?
you love durmstrang because it’s a living, breathing thing. with each year, it changes its curriculum according to the interests and needs of its students. it offers new classes that schools around the world would never dream of teaching. it teaches ‘forbidden arts’ and ‘dark magic’ because it knows that nothing is truly dark, and that the only dark thing about this would be its death at the hands if inattention.
you close your eyes, and breathe in the cool, stony scent of your school. it fills you from head to toe with excitement, but also peace in knowing that it will always be here for you. it is the gift that keeps giving, the tree of golden apples. you reach out and pluck one from its branches, and crush its crisp fruit between your teeth. so this is what magic feels like
