“She was a professor of political science, broadcaster and Indian freedom fighter. She took part in her first protest march aged eight. Mehta helped organise the Secret Congress Radio, an underground radio station that operated for a few months during the Quit India Movement of 1942. The first words broadcast on Congress Radio were hers, saying: 'This is the Congress Radio calling on La wavelength of] 42.34 metres from somewhere in India.' The organisers had to move the station's location every day to avoid capture. The police found them on 12 November 1942. Mehta told them she was about to play the national anthem. "Vande Mataram' and made them wait till it was over before they could arrest her.”
