IN DEPTH PHOTOSHOP BASICS WALK-THROUGH

To start off, I know photoshop seems all over the place! I remember when I first started using it, I had absolutely no idea what the heck I was doing, so don’t feel bad if thats where you are at too! Also, you will get the hang of it! After using Photoshop for a little bit, things start to come naturally! THIS WILL BE A VERY LENGTHY TUTORIAL. PART ONE WILL BE WRITTEN TIPS, AND THE SECOND PART WILL JUST BE IMAGES GUIDING YOU THROUGH THE PROGRAM.

Some starting tips!

- if you move your cursor over any of the icons/tools in photoshop, they will most likely have a title that hovers up that says what that thing will do!

- there are several ways to open/import an image or images! All of them are under the ‘File’ tab at the very top of your computer screen. First, and most commonly used, is just importing an image by going to File --> Open. This will bring you to your documents where you can select your photo. You can also import video frames if you want to make a gif! To do so you go to File --> Import --> Video frames to layers. And lastly, you can create a stack of images (a great way to make batch icons, or import several photos as multiple layers), by going to File --> Scripts --> Load files into stack. The wording on your photoshop may vary, but these should be generally the same.

- Most of the tools along the left side of photoshop have a little drop down arrow next to them, (except for the Move, and Zoom tools) which means there are more tools or options listed below that specific object. Take the select tool, for example. Its default shape is a rectangle/square, but if you right click on the icon (or control + click for mac users) you should be able to view the other ways you can use that tool, such as a circular select option.

-when opening some layers into photoshop, they have a little lock icon next to the image; which will prevent you from applying any edits to that image unless you unlock it. This is actually very simple! All you have to do is double click on that layer; a pop up box will come up, and hit ‘OK’ and you are good to go! You can now edit to your hearts content! (THIS IS ALSO SHOWN IN IMAGES BELOW)

- if you have something selected, lets say a person, and you want to delete the background behind them, right click over your selection (control + click for mac users) and a menu should come up with some options. Choose ‘select inverse’ and rather than the person, the background should be now selected. All you have to do then is click ‘delete’ and the background will be gone! You have yourself a transparent image!

-the main adjustment tools I use for editing are: levels, exposure, selective color, hue/saturation, and color balance.

PART TWO OF THE TUTORIAL (images):

1. the following images will show you what several different icons are/mean in photoshop, and will also give you a reference as to where they are located!

2. Now we will look at how to use some of the tools/figure out some important concepts.

sometimes when uploading an image to photoshop, there is a little lock icon next to your layer. (this will prevent you from applying any edits to your image) To fix this, simply double click on that layer, and select ‘OK’ when a box pops up. After selecting ‘OK’, your image should now be ready to edit! (the lock doesn’t always appear on images )

SHOWN BELOW:

the ‘window’ tab is a great place to find things you may be looking for, such as your actions, or your timeline! Especially when first opening photoshop, you may not know how to activate your animation timeline. If it isn’t shown as checked when you click the windows tab, it isn’t activated! Simply click on that thing you want to view, such as the timeline, and it should come up at the bottom of Photoshop. ( the timeline is used to see frames. this is key for gifs )

photoshop comes with a multitude of brushes, however, from time to time you may want some custom brushes that are different from the default brushes! If you go to google, and search for ‘free custom brushes photoshop’ there are tons of websites where you can download an array of free brush presets. To put them in photoshop, follow the images below!

(select the brush tool --> select the drop arrow next to the brush size --> click the gear icon on that upper right corner --> click ‘load brushes --> select your downloaded brush preset and voila! your brushes should have loaded successfully! )

Trying to find lost tabs?

if you upload enough images into photoshop, eventually some will become hidden behind other layers, and it can be nearly impossible to locate how to get back to that image without deleting all your other current projects. If you want to go back to that original image, follow the images below closely!

And thats a basic walkthrough of photoshop - mostly locating tools, and some important tips that helped me over my learning journey in the program! I hope this could help some of you!
