Hayden used a connection with Bill Donovan to be sent to commando training in Scotland. Unfortunately, he broke an ankle and had to return to the US.

Once recovered, Donovan suggested Hayden join the Navy. Instead Hayden joined the Marines under the pseudonym John Hamilton. He would use that name throughout his military and OSS career. Once he completed his Marine training, he asked Bill Donovan for a transfer to the OSS. He served in Italy, Yugoslavia and the Adriatic Sea in a number of covert missions conducting recon missions and supplying weapons to the partisans.
