“I’ve liked Ute Lemper for a long time, first coming across her in the 1991 album she released of Michael Nyman songs. Her rendition of his setting to music of a letter written by Mozart three days before his death, I Am An Unusual Thing is what first grabbed my attention at the age of 18. I was lucky to see her perform live earlier this year in the wonderfully intimate venue of Arcola Theatre Studio. . This 1996 album is Lemper going back to her roots, and celebrates the work of Weimar Cabaret, in particular the songs of those writers and musicians considered to be ‘degenerate’ by the Nazis. I bought this CD only two months ago from my local Mind charity shop. . Entartete Musik, as the sleeve notes explain are those works which have been “lost, destroyed or banned by the political disruptions of the twentieth century”. That’s putting it mildly of course, and most of these songs are by Jewish composers, who made fun of the social and sexual mores of the time. . Most wonderfully (for those like myself who don’t speak German) the comprehensive sleeve notes and wonderful photos of the era also include the lyrics of the songs in German and English. Thus we can appreciate in all its glory this rallying cry for the #metoo generation, written in 1926 by Claire Waldoff, Rau smit den Männern! : . “Chuck all the men out of the Reichstag / and chuck all the men out of the courthouse / Men are the problem with humanity / they’re blinded by their vanity / Women have passively embraced them / when we could have easily outpaced them / Yes we should have long ago replaced them / or better still erased them / If we haven’t made our feelings clear / we women have had it up to here...” .
