Bringing Military Families Closer Together
I was on the phone with my friend, Eleni this week. Eleni and I have been friends for nearly 15 years and we’ve never even lived in the same city! She’s married to a career-Army man and has two beautiful children (ages 3 yrs. and 7 mos.). She recently found out that her husband, David, is being deployed to the Middle-East and has less than 90 days to prepare.
Clearly she isn’t looking forward to it, but Eleni has done this before. The last time it happened, however, the kids were not old enough to grasp what was happening and David has not left the children for an extended period of time since.
Eleni told me how she and David were discussing how to deal with telling their oldest, Katy (a real daddy’s girl) where daddy was going. Everyday, Katy asks Eleni, “When is daddy coming home from work?” What do you tell her when you know he won’t be back for 9 months?
This discussion seemed to really hit David hard. As a goliath of a man who isn’t scared of anything, he went and laid with Katy in her bed and began to cry uncontrollably. He didn’t want to lose his amazing bond with the little person with whom he had grown so attached. What if she forgot him? What if she became angry with him for leaving?
Eleni told me about this new product some of the other Army Moms were buying called a Daddy Doll. It’s a plush toy with an image of the father’s face in his uniform. I thought this was a brilliant idea. How better to help the vivid imagination of a child than a toy that looks like daddy that they can play with and sleep next to? But what about David? I have a tough time imagining rugged soldiers cuddling up with plush look-a-likes of their children.
I later told Eleni about our product, Utellit (not even as a shameless plug) and that she made me realize how great it could be for military families. Setting up phone calls/Skype dates from opposite sides of the globe can be tricky, but with Utellit, you can record your little one doing something goofy or adorable and share it from your iPhone in just a few clicks. Likewise, Katy can hear her dad’s voice more regularly as the process is frictionless and does not involve any scheduling.
What do you think? Is Utellit a smart way for bring military families closer to one another? Let us know in the comments.
