Mylapore, 39024 Paseo Padre Pkwy, Fremont, CA 94538
Mylapore is the sister restaurant (same owners) as Idly Express (in the same shopping center). I love Idly Express, so I was excited to see learn about the new restaurant. Mylapore opened about three months ago. It is a South Indian restaurant and it’s vegetarian. Mylapore is a neighborhood in Chennai, India.
The set up is a different than I’m used to. Get a table first and a table number. Then you’ll order at the counter and pay. If you order chai or coffee, you’ll get a token. Bring the token to the coffee/chai stand in the back when you want your drink. Chai and coffee is typically served after the meal in India.
The menu includes quick bites, tiffin combos, dosas (so many kinds), uthappam, lunch thali, rice, snacks, dinner specials, desserts, and Indian beverages. Vegan items are marked on the menu.
There is a dosa happy hour Monday – Friday from 3 PM – 6 PM. All dosas are just $7.99.
I visited around 8 PM but they still had the dosa special that day. It’s such a good deal for a massive dosa.
Cheese masala dosa ($12.45 regular Price, $7.99 during happy hour), cooked to order and served with a bowl of sambar (a spiced lentil soup), and two chutneys (one green, one red). I wanted something spicy and this dosa was recommended to me. It was mildly spicy. Hmmm. The dosa was thin and crispy with a slight fermented tang. It was filled with cheese (two kinds) that melted (yes, there were cheese pulls), and a chunky potato mixture that was too wet (it made the center of the dosa soggy). With curry leaves, mustard seeds, and spices, the filling was delicious. The chutneys were excellent (not spicy) and the sambar was also great. Minor issues: filling was too wet, the dosa seemed a bit oilier than usual (maybe because of the cheese?). It's such a good value and so delicious though.
Masala chai ($3.50): it’s a small cup (but also consistent with what you’d find in Chennai) served screaming hot in a metal cup. It stayed hot for a long time. You can specify how strong and sweet you’d like it. Very nice, milky and spiced.
The restaurant was filled with Indian families and lots of noisy little kids. I was the only non-Indian there. Someone came by the check on me, someone brought water, and someone else offered a refill of sambar. The restaurant looks nice in a colorful and comfortable way. Everything still looks new too. It’s a popular place.
