Fuuuuuuck.
Okay, so much for being subtle. Fern was trying not to be obvious, doing his best to keep his eyes from lingering on the odd trio that everyone else is ignoring — but it’s pretty fucking difficult when the the guys are being so loud and animated. They’re obviously excited, and Fern can’t help but be a little drawn to that. No matter how badly he wants to be normal. No matter how badly he wants to stay rooted in the world of the living.
He’s been caught now, though; one of the ghosts (oh god, he’s really talking to a ghost, isn’t he? That’s where Fern’s life is right now.) is calling out to him, rushing up to his side with these ridiculous puppy eyes that make it fucking impossible to lie. And Fern breaks.
His fingers tighten around the strap of his backpack, and as he finally makes eye contact with the ghost, he comes to the unfortunate conclusion that he is, in fact, really cute. And probably wants an actual conversation, which Fern can’t have with him right now unless he wants to out himself as a freak to everybody at his new school.
“Yeah,” he says, and forces himself to turn his attention to one of his living acquaintances for a second. “Hey, I’m just gonna be — right back, I forgot something in my locker.” And another glance at the ghost before he’s heading off down the hallway, hoping he’ll get the message to follow.
