Internship Opportunity: UC Davis Superfund Research Program

The Superfund Research Program is looking for a writing minor to assist in their efforts to communicate science and research related to the UC Davis Superfund program to the general community.

The UC Davis Superfund Research Program is a multi-million dollar center grant that is funded to determine the fate and transport of hazardous materials in ground water, surface water, and air as they move from toxic waste sites into the environment. The program consists of seven integrated research projects (four biomedical and three non-biomedical), two research support cores, a training core, a research translation core, and an administrative core to address these problems. You can find out more information about the Superfund Research Program here.

This is a 1 or 2 unit internship (30 or 60 hours respectively). Hours are flexible, but a one-quarter commitment is required with possible renewal for Fall 2014. The position qualifies for the Writing Minor Writing Internship. You can find more information about the University Writing Program or the Minor here. Responsibilities: 1) Enroll in UWP 192: Internship in Writing for either 1 or 2 units. 2) Meet with site supervisor weekly to discuss progress and receive feedback. 3) Description of projects:

 Summaries for each Superfund Research project, including research highlights and past accomplishments for website

   Weekly Press Release or Facebook post that summarizes news relevant to Superfund.

  1/quarter – summary of a specific chemical the UC Davis Superfund program is researching and why this research is needed

  1/quarter – Highlight a Superfund Trainee: interview, summarize their research and write a short informational piece about them.

Other student initiated project(s) can replace a project listed above with approval from the site supervisor.

It is also highly encouraged to attend professional development seminar(s) identified by the intern or site supervisor and in agreement with site supervisor. Qualifications: 1) Upper division standing 2) Science major not required, but must have general knowledge of science (Bio 100 and Chem 2 series or equivalent), and preferred completion of UWP102B, 102C, or 111C) 3) Would prefer someone considering a career in journalism or science writing. 4) Self-motivated with great time management skills To Apply: Applicants must submit:

1) resume including related writing courses taken

2) a brief statement describing your interests in science communication including past experiences as well as how this internship will further your career goals (no more than 300 words)

3) a brief (1-2 paragraphs) summary of a science news story they were exposed to over the last few months (does not have to be relevant to UC Davis, please reference source of information and limit personal opinions).

UC Quarter Abroad and Internship in Sydney, Australia

The Education Abroad Center has an awesome quarter abroad program in Sydney, Australia! The program is from September 25th to December 6th, just as long as Davis quarters. When you study abroad with this program you get 20 units for the quarter and are guaranteed an internship which can count for 3 out of the 5 requirements for the UWP minor. It's a triple-dipper so why not go?

Deadlines for Minor Petitions and Adding Courses/Internships

January 17 is the drop deadline and the date to petition for the minor. Either Gary Goodman (383 Voorhies) or English Undergraduate Advisor Lynda Jones (177 Voorhies) can sign the petition for the writing minor.

The deadline to add courses - including internship units - is January 22nd.  Make sure to go in to Gary Goodman's office hours on Mondays or Wednesdays if you need her approval for internship units. She can also make individual appointments if you can't make it to her office hours. You CAN add a course after the deadline, but the university charges you a $3 fee and you have to have a PTA#. The process is much more time-consuming, so adding by deadline is preferable. If you plan to graduate in Spring, you must file for candidacy between February 1st and March 17th.

Another Writing Internship Opportunity for Aggie Voices

This is an opportunity to work directly with Susanne Rockwell, the Internship Coordinator, and Kenya Mitchell, the Site Supervisor, to maintain the Aggie Voices blog.

Aggie Voices, a UC Davis blog in its first year, gives prospective campus students an inside look into student life and the surrounding Davis community by showcasing personal stories by students and alumni.  In addition to highlighting student stories, the blog also features stories on student-led events and the various student organizations on campus to give readers a taste of the activities UC Davis offers. In addition to attracting new students to the UC Davis community, Aggie Voices works to share student accomplishments and upcoming student led activities with the Davis community at large in an effort to bridge the gap between the academic and non-academic sectors in Davis.  The ultimate goal is to showcase genuine student viewpoints and the uniqueness of UC Davis to potential applicants, their parents and the UC Davis community.

Responsibilities: •       Enroll in UWP 192: Internship in Writing for either 1 or 2 units •       Assist with writing, editing and soliciting posts for student blog. •       Brainstorm on new and innovative ways to communicate about UC Davis. •       Bring a student perspective to communication topics and approaches to better audience engagement. •       Attend development meetings with Susanne Rockwell and Kenya Mitchell as needed. •       Promote blog on social media outlets. •       Complete projects by deadlines. •       Meet with the faculty sponsor at least three times during the internship: at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end. Keep site supervisor informed of progress on editing projects, asking questions and seeking guidance as needed. •       Submit a log of hours worked at the end of the internship. Hours:  Minimum 60 hrs/quarter for 2 units of credit, or 30 hrs/quarter for 1 unit of credit. Hours are flexible. One-quarter commitment is required, but the position may be renewed for the Spring quarter of 2014. Capital Fellows Program Info Meeting

What: An information session for the Capital Fellows Program. Come and find out about awesome new opportunities to work in policymaking and development for 10-11 months as a full-time paid staff member in the California State Assembly. 

When: Monday, January 13, 2014 Time: 3:30 pm Where: Garrison Room, MU

California State Senate, California Executive Branch or the California Judiciary system. Fellows participate in policymaking, program development and implementation and gain first-hand experience in the governance and leadership of the most diverse, complex state in the nation.

Voted as one of the top 10 internships nationwide by Vault.com for 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014 , the Capital Fellows Programs were ranked highly for their combination of meaningful work experience and career opportunities. Writing Internship for Simply Charged, Inc. Available for Winter 2014

Professional Editing Internship Simply Charged Inc. Winter 2014 Simply Charged Inc. is a startup Point of Sale hardware provider. The products include a tablet peripheral that converts any tablet to a fully functional cash register system. The device allows connecting standard RS232 and USB devices and allowing the tablet to cost-effectively connect to printers, cash drawers, barcode scanners and such.  In addition Simply Charged has also developed a portable handheld pinpad that can be used to process credit and debit card transactions with any smart phone or tablet.  A majority of the technical development is out of Taiwan and as such the documents produced need the content reviewed for grammatical correctness while maintaining the technical integrity. Interns in our program will work indirectly with our R&D team out of Taiwan and directly with the US support team on a variety of projects including the editing of our Software Developer Kit manuals along with creating initial setup end user guides and manuals.

Hours:  Minimum 60 hrs/quarter for 2 units of credit, or 30 hrs/quarter for 1 unit of credit. Hours are flexible. This is a one-quarter commitment with possible renewal for Spring 2014.

Responsibilities •       Enroll in UWP 192: Internship in Writing for either 1 or 2 units •       Review documentation produced by our Taiwan office, edit and modify to improve flow and clarity of the information. •       Apply knowledge and skills gained in UWP 112A and or UWP 104T to editing tasks, which may include copyediting, proofreading, comprehensive editing, and/or formatting. •       Personally walk through the hardware initial configuration process, document steps, and develop a quick install user guide along with a FAQ document. •       Complete projects in a timely manner, particularly if client’s project has an externally imposed deadline. •       Meet with the site supervisor weekly to discuss editing projects and receive feedback on editing work, client interactions, and progress. Most meetings can be scheduled as a call, requires two visits to our Roseville facility. •       Meet with the faculty supervisor at least three times during the internship: at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end. Keep site supervisor informed of progress on editing projects, asking questions and seeking guidance as needed. •       At the end of the internship, submit to the site supervisor and the faculty advisor a portfolio of written work, a 4-5 page report on the internship experience, and a log of hours worked. Qualifications •       Completion of UWP 112A: Introduction to Professional Editing with a grade B or higher •       Junior or senior standing •       Excellent research, analysis, oral communication, and writing skills •       Excellent editing skills, including copyediting documents for consistency, correctness, completeness, and accuracy and editing documents for style, organization, and formatting •       Experience marking paper and digital documents using established symbols and conventions •       Experience using advanced features of Microsoft Word and other programs for editing •       Technical knowledge in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science •       Ability to use style manuals and style sheets to guide the editing process •       Ability to tailor editorial approaches to meet diverse client needs •       Ability to collaborate with diverse clients and coworkers •       Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision and  maximum initiative •       Time management skills to work efficiently and to meet deadlines This position qualifies for the Writing Minor Writing Internship (see “UWP Writing Interns” for more details on internship credit requirements here.
