vacuum formed teeth

I used the same technique for the teeth as I did for the eyes. So again I traced a template of the size of the jaw to use as a template, then carved top and bottom sets of teeth from clay to act as a former for the vacuum former. 

To save on plastic I carved a set of teeth for the other 2 monsters heads I had completed so they would be ready for install once I had painted them.

 I want to use this monster as a guide for the other ones so I made all the pieces of the others as I made them for this one to save time. Once this one was finished id go forward and put all the other monsters pieces together once I knew the format making, for a quicker build for each of the rest. The filming dates for the rest of the videos are staggered by a few weeks each, so this system gives me time to assemble each puppet between shoots using the first as a guide. 

The teeth were a bit detailed for the vac former to pick up all the grooves in the teeth. So I used a heat gun to slightly soften the plastic before removing the clay and used the edge of a ruler and my hands to gently bring out more definition between the teeth. I then used a scalpel to cut them out. To attach them to the head I used a scalpel to cut a line in the jaw for the teeth to in lay slightly. I filled this line with hot glue and pressed the teeth into it. once dry i painted the glue a darker shade of purple so it looked like the gums and it was really effective.

Vacuum formed eyes

while i was waiting for the body form to cure I decided to start working on the eyes. Emma Powell joined us around this time in the project and suggested I use the vacuum former to fit the eyes perfectly. She told me every puppets make or break is its eyes and its something ive always struggled with. I started by tracing the size of the eyes onto paper and using that as a template. I then used clay and started sculpting different sets of eyes with slightly different depths, this way i would fill the sheet of plastic and have multiple attempts without wasting the sheet of plastic. 

I Started cutting out the sets and found the second set i made fit perfectly!!

Rorie once showed us some fake eyes he’d made as props and one he had simply printed out the coloured part of the eye and glued it onto a ping pong ball. I thought this was really simple and effective way of doing this and meant i could play around with the size colour and position a lot before committing to it. I played around for a while until i felt like the puppet was looking at me in a natural way, rather than looking past me or seeming startled.

Finished a piece of terrain today, very satisfied with the way it turned out.

This is a piece by Amera Plastic Mouldings (http://www.amera.co.uk/).  They almost exclusively make vacuum-formed plastic terrain, so even the big pieces are very lightweight.

I didn’t add any major architecture--the walls and hills are all part of the basic sculpt.  My contribution was the soil, foliage and such.  And the painting, of course.

PRIMED: Rustoleum Flat Black.

DIRT:  

1. Waverly Inspirations (Walmart) 60710E “Truffle” Brown.  Covered everything but the wall ruins with this.

2. Apple Barrel Plaid 20432E “Nutmeg.”  Heavy drybrush covering most of the dirt portions.  Again staying out of the walls.  

3.  Apple Barrel Plaid 20576 “Toffee.”  Heavy drybrush highlighting pass on all raised areas of dirt.  Staying out of the deeper crevices.

4.  Apple Barrel Plaid 21390E “Khaki.”  Drybrush highlights on all edges of hills and contours.

STONE:

1. Waverly Inspirations (Walmart) 60711E “Elephant” gray.  Heavy coat on all walls and stone.  My favorite base-color for basic stonework.

2. Handmade Modern (Target) “Mouse” gray.  Heavy drybrush on all stone edges.

3. Waverly Inspirations 60726E “Mineral” gray.  Final highlight drybrush.

FOLIAGE:

Mostly “Mountain Tufts” from Army Painter, though there are a couple well-hidden “Swamp Tufts.”  The two little batches of flowers are Revell Meadowland purchased at Michael’s.
