Carrots, at last!

Ms. Houser's class at Valley View harvested the carrots they had planted back in the fall. The students patiently waited for the stems and leaves to become visible as the carrots first sprouted, and observed as they steadily grew larger over the past few months. When we harvested and washed the produce, the students could see the radiant yellow, orange and red colors of the carrots they grew!

Students at Conlee Elementary and Valley View Elementary learned about vermicompost in a hands-on lesson! The students now know how worms can make nutrient-rich soil for our plants, and that feeding them our left over vegetable or fruit scraps is a great way to recycle food. Most of all, they enjoyed picking up the worms!

Valley View Students Start Seed Experiment!

The Valley View Garden and Cooking Club enjoyed a healthy snack of grapes at their last meeting, and yes, they can tell you what part of the plant that is (fruit), as well as what plant parts they eat (all of them!). Students started an experiment to test seed viability with a variety of donated seeds, such as; beets, radishes, spinach, and more! It was neat to check out the different types of seeds and all their different shapes and textures. We'll check back next week after Thanksgiving break to see if any of the seeds sprouted.
