The Valravn, according to the more modern folklore, were ravens who drank the blood of a king slain in battle and unburied, with the crow that eats the king's heart gaining human intellect and supernatural powers.

My interpretation, also fitting with the old tales of the Valravn being a cursed knight (singular), is that the Valravn here, upon transformation, took the equipment of the army's unburied corpses as its own.

Hence it being ill-fitted.
