Nrityagram near Bangalore, India
A dance gurukul in the outskirts of Bangalore, a mere 30 km away in a very rural setting - away from the madding crowd. Whether in the early hours of the morning or with the setting sun - it was always a pleasure for A. and me to visit this idyllic haven of peace, creativity and dance forms. Students - local, national and international, stay in this dance village to imbibe and learn the dance forms in close proximity of the dance guru. Designed by Gerard de Cunha, this dance village, in its vernacular architecture form, was a delight to visit.
We were also lucky to attend a night long spring festival a couple of times during our stay at Bangalore. Named Vasanth Habba (discontinued now)- this was the celebration of artistic expressions in the form of dance, vocals, music, and musical instruments. Several acclaimed national and international artists graced the occasion and it is a sublime experience to be enthralled by their performances in the wee hours of the night and as the day breaks gradually.
Armed with blankets and hoodies and snacks and drinks, sitting under the star-lit skies that gradually gave way to the brightness at the horizon and taking in the symphony of ragas, dance compositions and instrumental ensemble - was something!
The dance school also welcomed kids and enthusiast from the surrounding farms and villages and it was delight to watch them perform along with the resident dancers.
