Vault Lights (Time Lapse #2), 2020, oil on linen, 20 x 16. Vault Lights were invented in the late 1800s before electricity to cast natural light beneath the sidewalks of New York and other cities into the vaults below–where people worked, walked and traveled, So much of city life still occurs beneath the surface, but the vaults lights are all but gone. A few remain in areas like Soho. They are not functional, and are barely recognizable, encrusted with the dirt and grime of many decades. Still, if you look carefully you can see the vast spectrum of reflected light, as well as the black emptiness under the broken lenses. A few years ago I began to create a Vault Light series that can be seen on my website. Since the pandemic, I began t thinking of them again, as indicators of the way things disappear, yet remain. I am adding to the series with new work called Vault Lights (Time Lapse). #vaultlights #artcaptureschange #artcapturestime #urbanremnants #urbanartifacts#paintinghistory https://www.instagram.com/p/CG1JSLclqfZ/?igshid=1ovjqtpid8a18

Vancouver has all these neglected sidewalk prisms all over downtown, and they’re being left to rot and crack. These glass tiles, which are actually called vault lights, were installed in buildings constructed before electricity in order to let natural light to illuminate their basements. It’s nice to see more of these stretches of sidewalk utilized for their unintentionally decorative quality. The Sam Kee vault lights on West Pender are probably Vancouver’s best-known. These are five blocks west on Pender, in front of @bangtown Hair Saloon. #sidewalkprisms #vaultlights #bangtownhairsaloon (at Bangtown Saloon) https://www.instagram.com/p/BrE5ZT3HDZA/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=107za1qo5v95z
