What exactly could he say, that he didn’t believe it, that there was no other choice, or perhaps that it wasn’t so. Truly, he could have said many things, but Steve knew that no matter what he said, he most likely would have been in trouble anyways.
Best not to dance around the facts. Truth could be altered and questioned, so could facts, but at least they were far more set in stone.
“All I’ve done is what was needed.” Above and beyond always. “If that turns me into the enemy, so be it.”
