Pacts of the Fanwatch - Part 3

Fanwalker and breaking of shells

I post very very little of my own content. This is mostly a result of not wanting to start conflict or get drawn into it. But I’ve sidelined myself long enough and would like to share with you all my own Fanwalker for mtg, based on my current and favorite ever D&D character.

Vel Sai, Phoenix Blade 3RR +1 create two 1/1 red Human Samurai creature tokens with haste. 0 Vel Sai, Phoenix Blade becomes a 3/4 Human Samurai creature with first strike that is still a planeswalker until end of turn. Prevent all damage that would be dealt to her this turn. -7 You get an emblem with “after your first combat phase this turn, untap all creatures you control that attacked this turn and after this phase, there is an additional combat phase.” Starting Loyalty 4

Vel Sai as a character has been pretty fun to play and become fairly important to me. She has a boldness and a determination to do right and not be stopped that I can’t quite bring myself to. Let me explain the character a bit and how she translated into the Multiverse.

So I play a 5e Dungeons and Dragons campaign run by a friend of mine and in his world that he crafted, she came form the central / eastern asia equivalent in the world. With her family and culture she ended up being essentially half-mongolian, half-japanese. The issue with that was that in Magic if I wanted to stay true to her ancestry, I’d have to bend over backwards to do it. The easiest scenario for that would have a parent planeswalker and her still be a planeswalker herself, which is INCREDIBLY unlikely. So I had to make a concession and settled on her home being Kamigawa over the Kolaghan Clan of Tarkir, as that was the stronger part of her identity.

I want to share much more about this character and other things I’ve written and created with all of you and here’s hoping I’ll be able to stick around.

Colour(s) - Central in Red, red is the core of her identity. Secondary after that would be Black, she is very self centered, especially in her youth. As she gets older the intensity of black mellows out and strikes a balance with her tertiary color. Tertiary in white, almost non-existent in her youth, it becomes more prominent as she ages and matures.

Home Plane - Tarkir (Dragons)

First Planeswalk Destination - Innistrad at 12 years old.

Name (and any nicknames or other titles) - Vel Sai, also called the Reckless Hunter in her teen years on Innistrad.

Abilities - Vel Sai’s magical abilities are fairly low for a planeswalker, less of a proper mage and more of a spell sword, using her magical skills to amplify her combat abilities, becoming faster and more cunning in a battle of blades. A rather unique “skill” of hers that she rarely uses and few are aware of is Tatsumasa, a dragon spirit that she can summon, in truth a magical blade she obtained from Kamigawa.

Personality and Ideals - Sai is a wild personality, refusing to be restrained and will rush headlong into a challenge presented in front of her. At 14 and 40 she still claims to be able to out drink anyone foolish enough to challenge her claim, and more often than not, she will be correct, but by a slimmer margin than her family would care to acknowledge. She is very self centered as well, as a teen she would constantly seek adventure in Innistrad’s wilds and would get into trouble and wear her wounds like badges. Her white and black personality traits would eventually come into balance as she grew older, having a selfish desire to protect her friends and family with the irrational justification of “they’re my people to torment” though she genuinely cares for them. Perhaps the biggest contradiction of her character is her phobia of dragons that she has never fully managed to conquer, despite Tatsumasa. @planeswalkerocchallenge
