What’s a Fromsoft level that, from a story and symbolism perspective, completely devastates you and eats away at your soul? For me, it’s Drangleic Castle from DS2. The existence of this place fills me with unfathomable sorrow and I will care to elaborate with text below this pretty image:
The fact that it sits atop an isolated hill, the emptiness of the rooms, the petrified soldiers, the ghosts and the rain all highlight the sense of dehumanization, isolation, loneliness, loss of self and overall confusion present all throughout this game (especially in, but not only, Nashandra and Vendrick’s relationship). This is a place where more than one person lived, descending towards insanity, for decades and decades rotting in either borderline psychological abuse or the awareness that the world is falling under a curse they do not fully understand, and that everyone is desperately trying to find a cure for, but with no avail.
Worry not, Your Majesty! I will protect Sylvester.
[Velstadt casts a miracle with his sacred hammer, sending both him and the Floorlicker back to another place in the castle.]

Oh My God I Am Going To Throw D3rLord3 InTo THE FUCKING PIT
In honor of this meme reaching 300 notes (which is wild to me), have another follow up. Truly, they are the stalwart defenders their...
Wait. Who invited Malenia? She didn't even die attempting to protect her dearest brother!
I find it quite ironic (I'm without a better word for it) that there are no callbacks to Velstadt in Dark Souls 3, as far as I'm aware.
For Raime we have the Fume Ultra Greatsword, Nashandra is shown in human form in a painting in Irithyll, and Vendrick- the King of Want- shield can be found in the same area as Raime's blade. Even the Dragonriders are mentioned, through their bow, also in the same zone.
Yet nothing to reference Velstadt.
No weapon description, no armour set, no paintings or anything that calls back to the King's right arm, his shield, his Royal Aegis . Could simply be that the developers didn't know how to incorporate a reference in, but I think it was intentional.
After all the description of his soul gives us the answer- he truly was Vendrick's shadow, in both his life and later his death.
follow-up to my Raime dood ft. ciartoristein the other day. my headcanon for Velstadt's appearance
