Moving on (3):
Her hands were cold and her leg kept flittering from nervousness. She was back in the penthouse where she was living with Bucky – before everything when down the drain. She was standing in the middle of the living room, taking in the surroundings. Even though everything seemed to be the same and unchanged, the place felt odd, unsettling. The bed was still messy, as they left it before leaving. There was a mug on the kitchen counter that belonged to Yelena. She quickly put it into the dishwasher because it was stinking badly.
Y/N put down her leather jacket and draped it over the couch. A loud exhale escaped her throat. He was supposed to arrive any minute. Steve had sent her a text saying they were leaving the hospital. That was twenty minutes ago.
Her mind kept coming to scenarios of what if – what if he doesn’t want to see her; what if all the messages were fake and he did it just to get her back to the city to get rid of her; what if once he sees her he’ll break up with her? All she wanted to do was bite her nails. But the expensive manicure would be a waste of money.
Again, nausea hit her hard and she did some breathing exercises so she wouldn’t vomit on the beautiful carpet under the coffee table. Sighing, she sat down on the couch and went through her emails, just to be sure she didn’t miss anything. Peter kept giving her updates when he found something that could help her solve the mystery. This was the calmest weeks of her life, minus the problems with Bucky. No one was trying to blow up anything and the rest of the business was booming.
The sound of keys and door opening brought her attention to the hallway. Her heart skipped a beat and she held her breath for a short moment. Her ears were focused on the sound of steps approaching the living room.
Bucky appeared at the entrance door to the room. That was the moment he stopped walking and his eyes locked with hers. “Y/N,” he whispered.
“Hi,” she greeted him. Her voice was low and emotionless. Bucky would have missed it if he didn’t watch her lips move.
Her eyes moved to the spot where his left arm was missing. She wanted to cry. How could she hurt the man she loved that much? No, it wasn’t her fault. The bomb was meant for her. “How,” she cleared her throat, “how are you feeling? Any pain?”
He took a few steps closer and looked down at the missing limb. “I have some medications for the pain but it’s not bad – more like phantom pain.”
“Oh, okay,” she nodded.
The atmosphere was heavy and they were surrounded by grief and something that resembled darkness. It seemed that they wouldn’t be able to move on from this traumatic event.
“I went through hell when I woke up,” Bucky started to talk. “I discovered that I was in a hospital and realized that I don’t feel anything in my left arm. When I looked down, it was gone.” He stopped talking and observed the missing arm. “So many emotions went through me – I wanted to scream, break everything and beat every person that touched me. It was a lot.”
She couldn’t muster a word. It was painful to hear about his feelings and what he went through.
“Do you know what the last thing I saw was? Your face – your beautiful smiling face. But before that, before I went unconscious after the explosion, I saw someone walking away from me. I didn’t know who it was and what they were holding, but then the image of your face came to me and I thought I you did this.
“So, yes, when I woke up and saw you, I was angry at you. I was screaming at you and hated you. I wished you nothing but the worst. I didn’t want to see you, I didn’t want to know anything about you, and for a brief moment,” he paused, hesitating if he should continue. He did. “For a moment, I stopped loving you.”
Her eyes widened and a tear immediately ran down her cheek. This was it. “Oh,” she said timidly and lowered her gaze. “Okay.” She had to sit down on the couch, her heart pounding loudly.
“No, no Y/N, it’s not okay. They brought a psychologist and doctors that talked to me about the injury, as well as all my emotions. As much as I hated it, I worked with them. They helped me realize a lot of things. But it was Sam and Steve who brought me back to my right mind. They helped me move forward and opened my eyes.”
He decided to sit on the couch right next to her. He put his right hand on top of her thigh and squeezed it. “I love you, Y/N. I know you had nothing to do with it.”
“You almost died because of me,” she whispered. The cry was soft as if she didn’t want him to see her cry.
He shook his head. “No, it wasn’t because of you. You didn’t know it would happen. I was the one who offered to go to the house.” The hand was now on her cheek, stroking it gently. “I’m alive. I’m here.” Bucky took one of her hands and put it on his chest where his heart was beating. “I’m alive.”
After all those weeks of mixed emotions and suppressed anger, Y/N started to cry heavily. Tears were streaming down her eyes. She kept shaking her head, watching her hand on his chest. She felt the heart. He was there, with her. Maybe they would be able to overcome this.
He lifted her head and looked into her eyes. “I love you, Y/N. I would never stop loving you. Even when I was mad, angry, and sad, and depressed, I still loved you – even when I felt I stopped for a moment.” And then his lips found hers in a soft kiss. It felt like their first kiss after eternity. “Now,” he leant his forehead against her, enjoying the closeness. “Please, tell me why you left.”
“I should have stayed in bed,” she said out of nowhere.
“What?” Bucky was confused.
She pushed away. “Wait,” she said and ran away from him.
For a second he thought she was going to run away, but when he saw her run into the bathroom he was relieved. The door closed with a loud thud. “Are you okay?” he shouted. That’s when he heard the sound that was vomiting. He made a grimace.
He stood up from the couch and walked closer to the door. It was fast. He heard the flushing sound and then running water. When she came outside, he noticed how beaten she looked. “Hey, what’s happening?”
“Nerves,” she sighed and looked at him. “This whole thing makes me nervous, stressed and nauseous.”
“From me?”
“From everything,” she admitted, defeated. “I almost lost you. You hated me and I realized you’ve changed me. I never cared so much about anyone but you. I care about Yelena. I do, but the thought you hated me, and blamed me for everything, it broke me.”
“Y/N.”
“I was ready to give up on us. I was ready to accept that you were done with me and I needed to move on. And I thought I can’t be sad about one man that hates me. So I left town and the States.”
Bucky’s eyes were filled with sadness. “Are you giving up on us?”
She stared into his blue eyes. “Are you giving up on us?”
“Never,” he said.
She shook her head. “Neither am I.” That answer made him relax again. “When I came back I heard your voicemails. At first, they were not nice. I was ready to flush the phone. Later, they turned from nice to heart-warming and I ended up crying because I knew I loved you so much. The thought of not fighting for you was terrifying.”
“I love you so much, doll.”
She reached for his left hand only to realize that it no longer was there. It was awkward and she felt ashamed. “Sorry,” she mumbled.
“That’s okay,” he smiled. “I still forget that it’s not there.”
“To answer your question,” she reached for the right hand and entwined fingers with him. She walked them back to the couch and sat down on it. “I couldn’t stop fighting for you and that’s why I’ve visited some old friends of mine who owed me a service. I have managed to arrange a meeting with them. All I have to do is call them.”
“A meeting? That’s why you left the States?”
“I- uh, I was arranging something for you as a form of an apology,” she admitted. “Could you please not ask more? I would like this to be some sort of surprise,” she made puppy eyes.
He leaned in and kissed the tip of her nose gently. He wanted to kiss her on the lips, but because of the vomiting, he moved to her nose instead. “Okay,” he said calmly. “So, what now? Will you be staying here with me or are you going back to Yelena’s?”
“Do you want me here?”
“Of course, doll. I love you and you are my girl, my wife. I want to be with you. It’s been a long time and I don’t want to let you go. So, stay, it’s your home too. We can order in and either we can spend the day alone or we can call everyone and enjoy the night with our closest family.”
“Just the two of us, please,” she hugged him tightly. “I’ll arrange the meeting. Could you order food?”
He smiled and kissed the top of her head. “Chinese, I know what you love.”
. . .
A phone was loudly vibrating on a night table. It kept going for a very long time before Y/N reached for it and looked at the screen with sleepy eyes, barely able to see the name of the caller. She frowned, annoyed that someone was calling her this early in the morning. That someone was surprisingly Loki.
“What?” she mumbled into the phone, letting him know that he woke her up and she was not pleased.
Loki: Morning darling, did I wake you up?
“Such a stupid question for 7 AM,” she snarled. “What do you want? And make it quick.”
Loki: I am back in the city with Thor and I want to know if you’d like to join us for lunch. You had a birthday and we hoped you’d call but we haven’t heard from you at all.
She rolled her eyes and then Bucky’s right arm wrapped around her waist. He hummed to her back, pissed someone woke him up. “I had some personal issues I needed to take care of,” she said. “Hold on the line,” and she muted the call. Y/N rolled to Bucky and kissed his forehead. “I’m sorry,” she apologized.
“Who is it?” he mumbled.
“Loki and his brother,” she said. “They want to take me out for lunch. Would you mind if I go?”
“Yes,” he replied and then grinned. “I wanted to take us out for lunch with everyone. How about breakfast? I am tired and you are already up.”
She smiled at him and kissed the tip of his nose. She unmuted the call. “What about breakfast in an hour? Pick a place and text it to me.”
Loki: There is this nice French restaurant that serves amazing breakfasts. I believe it’s on Spring Street, Manhattan.
“Uh,” she started to think. “I think I’m going to need an hour and a half. I’ll meet you there,” and she ended the call. “Suddenly people want to meet with me,” she commented.
“The Asgardians?” Bucky asked and put a pillow over his face with his hand.
“If you don’t want me to go just say it and I will stay,” she proposed.
He put the pillow down and looked at her with a smile. “Go. I will sleep a bit longer. The lunch will be at one so be on time. I’ll text you the address,” he winked at her cuddled into the duvet.
With one last quick kiss on the lips, she stood up from the bed and quickly took a shower, brushed her teeth and dressed in something casual. She was meeting old friends and nothing more. Y/N took one of the sports cars Bucky owned and drove to Manhattan where she met with Loki…
Just Loki.
She parked the car and then walked inside the restaurant where she was met with a table for two. She squinted but walked to him with a neutral expression on her face. “Where’s Thor?” she asked him.
“Hello, darling,” he stood up and approached her. He took her hand and kissed the top of it. “I’m glad we could meet.” He pulled her chair and helped her take a seat like a gentleman. “Thor wanted to be here, however, that moron has a huge hungover and he decided to stay in bed.”
She chuckled. “Typical Thor. Well, maybe next time then. So, how are you? Still, making lives miserable around you? I know that is your speciality.”
He had a smile on his face and called a waitress. They ordered orange juices, black coffee and some pastries. “I love my job, you know that,” he said when the waitress left. “It was fun the last time you visited us. How long was that? Two years ago or three?”
“Something like that. But that was a long time ago and a lot of things changed,” she said. “Yes, it was fun when I visited you when I came back from the army. We had a great time together.”
“LA is fun,” he said proudly. “You loved LA. I thought you would come back but that didn’t happen.”
She put her chin on top of her hands, scanning his pale mystical face. He was a very attractive man, she had to admit. “Yeah, well, I had a lot of stuff going on. I believe you heard that my brother was killed and my father died because he couldn’t fight anymore and thus everything belongs to me.” This time, she was proud when she said it.
“I know, I’m sorry for your losses and congratulations on being the new head of your family and the Foxes. I was worried that your brother would be the new head but luckily, that didn’t happen,” he put a weird type of smile on his face – as if he was trying not to offend her.
She was annoyed. “Dude, my father is finally dead and my brother was an idiot. If they didn’t shot him, he would have died due to a drug overdose. Chill, please.”
“Your brother was a dick, that’s true,” he admitted. “Seriously now, will you ever come to LA?”
“Visit? Sure, I can find the time with Yelena or with Bucky. It would be a nice vacation,” she said.
The waitress brought them their drinks and food. When Y/N glanced at her, she kept smiling at Loki, basically flirting with him. She found it funny. Loki was a man that could easily seduce a woman. She could see him doing it now with the waitress.
“So, you and the big bad Wolf,” he exhaled and averted his gaze to her when the waitress was gone. “When did that happen?”
“Over a year ago,” she replied and put a piece of croissant into her mouth.
“Wow, well, uh, that’s great,” he quickly kept nodding. “So, uh, how does that work? Two big rival families are now working together or how should I picture it?”
Loki started to eat his food while Y/N answered him. “It’s simple. We formed an alliance against Hydra, defeated them and now, we have most of New York for ourselves. Also, Stark helped. We work great together.”
“Huh,” he grimaced and put another piece of food into his mouth.
“What?” she frowned.
“It’s just that these things don’t last. It’s only a matter of time before someone will turn on you and destroy you.” He looked straight into her eyes, his face all serious while eating. “Plus, you don’t seem to be the kind of woman who would like to be with one man.”
“Well, clearly, you don’t know me well enough,” she winked at him.
For a few minutes, they ate in complete silence until she decided to talk again. “If that happens,” she drank the rest of the juice in one go, “they know I’ll give them hell. They saw it, they know who I am. Everyone knows what I can do.”
“That’s sweet,” he commented.
“Come on, Loki. You saw it with your own eyes,” she bit her lower lip and relaxed in her seat. “You saw what I did to those young men when I visited you in LA. Don’t say you weren’t impressed. I dare to say you were a bit scared of me.”
He leaned closer to her and tilted his head. “That was a long time ago, darling. Maybe I’m going to need a little reminder.”
That’s when she put the cutlery on the plate and leaned against the backrest. She knew what he was doing and she wasn’t falling for it. “Listen, Loki, I’m glad that we got the chance to hang out and talk. But next time, if you try this shit when I told you minutes ago that I’m with Barnes, I’m going to shoot you in the head in front of the whole restaurant and still get away with it.” And then there was the wicked smile she put on her face.
“Come on, Y/N. Don’t tell me you are serious with that man,” he had to laugh at her. “Remember the good time we had together?”
“It was one night. One fucking night. We got drunk, smoked weed and needed a release. That’s all.”
“It was a hell of a night. I think about it almost every day,” he admitted. The sparkle that was in his eyes made her uncomfortable.
She wiped her hands with the white cloth they each had and stood up. “I was expecting a lot of things but not this. Now, if you excuse me, I am going back to my husband.”
“Whoa, wait, husband? I thought he was your boyfriend and not husband,” he was shocked by that information.
“Bye Loki. Thanks for the food,” and then she left him alone.
Y/N’s body shivered when she left the restaurant and headed to the car. Loki was a good friend and now, he turned into a weird guy. A guy who was too alone to think straight. What happened to him?
As she was sitting behind the wheel, her phone started to ring. When she discovered who was calling her, she got excited. “Hello?”
Woman: I would like to confirm the meeting, Miss Fox. Is the address, you’ve sent, correct?
“Yes,” she nodded with a smile. “We’ll be waiting for you this Friday at 6 PM.”
And that was the end of the call. With these people it was typical. It was always a quick phone call just to double-check and that was it. Luckily, the meeting was confirmed. At least something good was happening after such a long time.
