"You're alright-- You're alright. Just calm down."
She’s crying. She’s crying. And bawling. And heaving. And nothing is helping her.
Ellie hears Sarahs soothing voice. She feels heat radiating from the other and it’s sort of soothing and she just wants it to stop. “I just don’t… know what happened.”
This is all over a nightmare. She’s LIVING a nightmare. Monsters everywhere. And shes crying over a nightmare about Joels death. Which makes this even more innapropriate as the girl comforting her right now was Sarah herself. That brings on guilt. Why did she feel so bad about Joels death? She hasn’t even comforted Sarah about the situation and she’s his biological daughter. Does she even know he’s dead? They’ve never really talked about it.
Her fists were balled on the round as she started taking deep breaths. Finally calming down. “I’m.. Sorry..”
“Hey, hey, hey...” Sarah knelt in front of Ellie and gently brushed her tears away. “Don’t apologize. I wasn’t asleep. You were just havin’ a bad dream, that’s all. Just a dream.”
It was times like this that made Sarah realize that no matter how tough Ellie seemed, no matter how many runners and clickers she took down, she was still a kid. She remembered all the times Joel or Tommy would comfort her, back before the world crumbled, when everything was simple. She remembered, too, the nights she had cried alone in the Austin QZ after a nightmare. Without her father or uncle, no one had been there for her, and those memories made it all the more important to Sarah to be there for Ellie.
“Breathe for me. I’ll find the matches ‘n’ light a candle or somethin’, okay?”
