Ok feminism story time

Once when I was a sophomore in college the teacher asked if there were any Boy Scouts in the room who could remember the Scout Law. The men in the room (including the professor) we're trying to remember but couldn't. When they'd decided no one in the room could remember I (a woman) shot my hand in the air and when called upon I said "A scout is Trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courtesy, kind, obedience, cheerful, thrifty, brace, clean, and reverent." Everyone starred at me trying to figure out how a woman could know the Scout Law when the guys couldn't. I had to explain that I was in Venture Crew as a teen and as such a member of Boy Scouts of America. And that's the story of how a woman was a better Boy Scout. Not to say that all women make better Boy Scouts. This was one story with a small population size.

Girls in boy scouts Rant

It's 3 am and I've got work at 7, but I was scrolling through the boy scout tag since I'm working at the black Creek Scout Reservation's summer camp. I've noticed this is a popular topic, with a lot of the same repeated arguments. One of the most popular is that we already have girl scouts....no. just no. Boy scouts and girl scouts are not taught the same thing, at all. Boy scouts are taught survival skills and hands on training, while girl scouts are taught more domestic skills.

I personally found my loop hole. Venture crew. We camped with the boy scouts, we learned basic survival skills, and I got my blade safety course and my first aid certificate all in one day. I felt like venture crew was a happy medium, but it wasn't the same, we weren't funded, and the reason we actually got to do anything was because our venture crew leader was in charge of the the BCSR.

Because of this, I feel that it's a great thing to have girls integrated with the boys. I work handicrafts at our camp, and help with blacksmithing, art, leather working, and Indian lore.

We have two girls that are at the camp with their fathers, who are scout leaders. We'll call the first girl K-Jam. Her dad was visiting our station during art and I asked if she wanted to join in, then we had leather working and she did that with them too. She game back with her friend the next day with a leather working kit that she had got for Christmas and one from the trading Post and they say there and worked on it. I got to watch these amazing girls, ages around 6-8, work harder than most boy scouts. They had a drive and a passion for this. K-Jams dad asked her if she was gonna be a scout like her brother and she got the biggest smile on her face and said "maybe" and he talked about her sister who was already joined. He even asked if I was planning on being an eagle scout.

This type of equality is not about feminism or wanting to be included. It's about learning skills you need for real life and skills you enjoy. It's about having the opportunity and resources to be whatever you want in life.

Venture Crew Presidential Cabinet

I just had my very first meeting as the secretary to my Venture Crew. So of course, about an hour before hand, I realized that as the primary note-taker and idea-former I should probably show up with ideas in hand. Cue me quickly jotting down 20 or so Venture outings, events, and community events we can do. My friend, our VP, showed up not long after I started eating dinner to pick me up for the meeting. And when we got there I brought out my notebook to show hem some of the ideas I had worked out for this meeting- they both started laughing. In the “holy crap why didn’t we come to this meeting prepared???” kind of way XD I legit had plans for event options for the next four or five months laid out and they, the President and Vice President of our crew, had absolutely nothing. Besides that it was actually a productive meeting! We solidly planned the next four months projects, going into detail on a couple, and set up a time for our next meeting all in about an hour. Pretty good, I’d say :)
