Dear Students, Here is a way to use a drawing jam for poster creation.
These images were created by members of ACK!- (for Applied Comics Kitchen) a group of mostly grad students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who use drawing jams and comics to expand research method possibilities.
These poster ideas are created by doing round-robin drawings. We all draw for four minutes without talking, and then pass our papers to someone else. Then we work on the page we’ve been handed for four minutes and then pass it around again after another our minutes.
These are results of our most recent jam— five of us worked for a total of 20 minutes come up with five collaborative ideas for a poster for an upcoming workshop by Dr. Veronica Berns.
Each poster was drawn by five different hands in four minute segments.
It’s such a fast way to get ideas, and it’s one of the things we’re playing with in the Image Lab at the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery. So much can gets done in such a short period of time when you are drawing ideas. It gets you somewhere so much faster than ‘talking’ about ideas, no matter what level of drawing skill you have.
Participants were PhD students from Medicine, Gender Studies, Geography, Curriculum and Instruction. None of them has had formal art training.
It’s exciting to work with such smart brave people.
