@arielkalma & Gilbert Cohen - Head Voices (@versatile_rec) Australian poet/producer Ariel Kalma teams up w/ Versatile Records labelhead Gilbert Cohen for an album of pancultural beats, riddims, melodies, and modular synth, forming a tapestry for Kalma to weave his French poetry. There's a truly headswirling array of different cultures evident on Head Voices. At times, Kalma's vocals almost sound like whisper-singing from Burundi. There's African-sounding hand-clapping. There's some South American sounding flute, like something you'd hear echoing down from a misty mountain in Chile. This kind of magpie borrowing can be tacky and tasteless, oftentimes. Kalma and Cohen pull it off with grace and charm, however. They both seem knowledgable and passionate about music from all over the world, as well as having a firm control of their own creative process. It's a key difference, taking inspiration rather than just taking. Head Voices is rooted in friendship, in two musicians coming together in a room and sharing ideas, inspiration. It offers some of the finest things dance music has to offer, yet it still sounds fresh, immediate, capturing a moment which is later polished to perfection. Great stuff!
