6. Does your character have recurring themes in their dreams?
Adele - I exclude any Plot Dreams for this for obvious reasons. Still, I can’t totally separate one from the other just bc the plot as a whole is a reflection of her actual dreams/psyche, so... very big emphasis on flowers/gardens as a whole, a lot of dreams about her parents, and a lot of dreams about her future. She doesn’t have pleasant dreams very often, so most of these are meant to be interpreted in a sort of neutral sense- for example, she’ll frequently dream about her mother, and these aren’t nightmares per se, but these dreams don’t give her any sort of happiness. I think otherwise her dreams are sort of surreal and hard to describe, though they tend to have their own narrative to themNeri - In general Neri has more happy dreams than Adele but I think that’s more bc Neri isn’t overwhelmed as easily so anything sensory can be enjoyable for her. W that said her happy dreams tend to be really indulgent and to an outside observer might seem really silly and childish but it’s based a lot in her just. Enjoying things in general. Food/drink in particular is a recurring theme. However, while her dreams aren’t as ‘surreal’ necessarily, I don’t think they have as much of a coherent narrative as Adele’s tend to. Generally they’re just events that happen and she enjoys them.Shiko - Has relatively down to Earth dreams which vary quite a bit in mood. A surprising number of her dreams are about taking care of other people/things, even ones that she’s never interacted with before. Other than that, she tends to dream about things she does IRL, but scenes change frequently and there’s no real ‘plot’ to her dreams. Often she’ll come up with songs in her dreams.Shinya - Generally cannot make heads or tails of his dreams because they tend to be... like small flashes of understanding in otherwise empty space. A lot of lights he doesn’t know the meaning of. Often his dreams have narratives, but only very vague ones, like knowing you’re working towards a purpose but not what that purpose is. His dreams are barren. There’s nothing in them but abstract light.Nirva - Can’t ever remember his dreams and is generally unsure whether he has them. The ones he does have are very very logical and realistic- he’ll have entire dreams that are just him sitting and repairing torn clothes or something. As a person he is very very tactile so crafts tend to be a big theme for him in general... as far as narratives go his dreams tend to be such a close reflection of his real life that they tend to be entirely comprehensible and just him working through a day’s chores or something.
7. Does your character have recurring themes in their nightmares?
Adele - This is something I didn’t originally consider for characterization or anything but one recurring theme I’ve noticed w IDoE as a whole is Adele tends to dwell on thoughts of her body being invaded by foreign creatures, so parasites beneath her skin or eggs being implanted in her or something. Another strong recurring theme is visions of herself or modified versions of herself which she must either attack or be attacked by in order to progress the dream. In those dreams, cannibalism will also sometimes occur.Neri - Doesn’t have nightmares that frequently but when she does they are Bad. Generally she’ll forget these dreams, though, which is good, because Neri in general is kind of bad at telling what should and should not be told to other people. One recurring feature is dreams about developing cancer, which extends to the point of her being unrecognizable. She’ll also frequently have nightmares about being pushed off of a ledge and tortured on her way down...Shiko - Kind of ironically Shiko has a lot of nightmares about being unable to go to sleep. She’ll dream about having to stay awake for months on end, every attempt at going to bed only leading her to obsess over her insomnia. This theme actually takes precedent over dreams she has about her historically ill health. Another strong recurring theme is humiliation in being revealed/exposed in ways she can’t control, particularly in regards to her history w mental illness and also her experience w gender as a whole.Shinya - Often the distinction between a dream and a nightmare isn’t too clear for Shinya because both have the recurring theme of absolute void... however a lot of his nightmares have him walk down a circular, downwards path which he knows he will die at the end of but which he cannot turn back around from. When he walks he still sees nothing but fairy lights and meets no resistance on his way down. He just keeps going until he wakes up.Nirva - Again doesn’t remember his dreams but often his nightmares just tend to be flashbacks, though his memory isn’t perfect so parts will be missing. As individual components a lot of emphasis on horizontal cuts, coldness, and Bad Touches which he still doesn’t really understand as bad. On the very rare occasion his dreams encroach upon any real abstract territory he, like Adele, will have dreams about confronting his own alternate self(s). :(
