Saturday morning... Lego morning. #classictoys #VIDEOfree #play
I wrote some of my initial thoughts on this whole experience...
I wrote a bit about my experience going without video for the month of July over at The Buddy Box. Check it out.
A Week Into My #VideoFree July
It’s been a week without video. That means no TV, no movies, no Vine, no Periscope. I had always assumed video was pervasive, but I wasn’t really aware of just how many aspects of daily life it permeated.
Right off the bat most social networks became troublesome with autoplaying video. I had to turn it off on Facebook and Instagram. Then, it became apparent that it was really difficult to discern a thumbnail for a photo from a thumbnail of a GIF from a thumbnail for a video, which I never noticed before.
Going without video even interrupts social interactions. My niece and nephew have asked me to come watch something with them, which I couldn’t do. I couldn’t spend time with family members while they were watching TV.
Aside from the diffuse video, I also realized just how much time it ate up. This was easy to understand because finding ways to occupy myself without video have been excruciating! The last thing I want to do when I’m tired is exercise brain power to read or write. I knew TV was a good time waster, but what I thought of as dessert is looking more and more like it was my main course.
I have found that I listen to a lot more music. I haven’t read as much as I’d like. That’s something I need to stretch into, I think.
Overall, the last thing I want from this little experiment is to come off judgmental or pretentious or attention-seeking. I’m doing this first of all for me. And it’s not something that’s going to completely change my world, but it has made me more aware, which was my hope.
Here’s to week 2.
Video-Free July
I’m spending the entire month of July video-free. I know—these media fasts-come-publicity stunts are almost intolerable. I hate them. So I hope this comes off the right way.
Lately my life has devolved into a kind of slump. Wake up, go to work, come home, turn on the TV, binge on YouTube and TV Shows, repeat the next day and the next. Video has begun to occupy a shameful share of my waking hours,…
