OLDSCHOOL (2000) #TBT —Somehow, it’s been 15 years since Lil Zane’s debut album, Young World: The Future, hit stores. Despite posting paltry first-week sales numbers — where it sold only an estimated 40,000 copies — Young World went on to allegedly rack up 300,000 in total album sales. By today’s standards, that’d pit Lil Zane as one of the industry’s top sellers, but as far as 2000 was concerned it bombed. However, despite its relative failure, one good thing did come from that album: the 112-assisted “Callin’ Me” single. Zane and 112 had chemistry. Zane featured on the R&B’s group’s “Anywhere” record and toured with them, so the pairing made sense. When they eventually linked for “Callin’ Me,” they catapulted to no. 21 on Billboard’s “Hot 100s” chart, less than a month after the album’s release (you could argue it was the catalyst for the resulting sales). Here’s the thing that most who know “Callin’ Me” will admit: The most memorable part wasn’t Zane, though—it was 112’s hook. What made it great is that it just feels like a fun summer evening whenever you listen. Maybe that idea stayed implanted due to the warm waters and speed boating shown in the video.
