In Vietnam the Communist-led nationalist resistance movement, the Vietminh, had taken control of the country when Japan surrendered. British troops commanded by Lord Mountbatten landed in the southern city of Saigon, armed Japanese prisoners of war and used them to disarm the Vietminh, and then handed the city to the French colonial authorities.

In March 1945, the occupying Japanese forces overthrew the colonial French administration in Indochina. With the war going badly for the Axis and metropolitan France now liberated, Japan wished to forestall any attempt to oppose their army by the French forces in Indochina. The situation created a political vacuum in Vietnam which the nationalist movement exploited. The first Viet Minh military units had already been formed under General Vo Nguyen Giap inside Vietnam. Recruitment and agitation among the rural population began, with the Viet Minh promising freedom from both both French colonialism and Japanese occupation.

Meanwhile Emperor Bao Dai proclaimed Vietnam’s independence, under Japanese auspices, in the same month.
