For the first time in the history of the Vietnam war an American Destroyer was attacked in retaliation for Secret raids on North Vietnam By South Vietnamese of the coast of North Vietnam. The picture shows this daylight attack on August 2 1964. Two nights later later,when, at night, in heavy seas, when the weather was filled with with Thunderstorms,a second attack was reported to have taken place. However there was no evidence that this attack really took place. President Lyndon Johnson, under pressure from Robert McNamara, Secretary of State, bombed North Vietnam and passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, Giving President Johnson to Launch the Vietnam war.
