This week's exclusive MOARRR mix is coming from Budapest, courtesy of the best Hungarian selector we know. VIKIPOP is not only one of the most respected tastemakers, but also a fine DJ, journalist, radio host. And on the top of these all, he is the right hand of the German house star, Tensnake. Now your're listening, aren't you?
Press PLAY and read our interview with him about football, music, the Hungarian scene and things to do in Budapest.
MOARRR: Before we dive deep into music, let's talk about your other beloved subject, football! What's closer to your heart?
VIKIPOP: Music has been and will always be closer to my heart, but football is also very important in my life. I could say it's just a hobby, but the truth is, it's a little more than that, a huge passion. I used to play in a non-league team when I was younger and I still play with my friends every week in an amateur league. It always makes me happy to score goals, which I I'm quite good at haha.
Ever since I first saw Eric Cantona play back in the 90's my favourite team has been Manchester United. I'm really happy that after 2 and a half years they are at the top of the Premier League table again...
MOARRR: Readers outside of Hungary might be unfamiliar with you, can you give us a little resume of your musical activities?
VIKIPOP: I've been listening to electronic music since 1998, Stardust's Music Sounds Better With You was quite a turning point in my life. First I was just a fan, and then I started to work in Trancewave Records, one of Budapest's well known record stores. In the late noughties I was a journalist and later editor of the Hungarian electronic music magazine Freee.hu. Since 2012 I've been working for German house heavyweight Tensnake. I'm pre-checking his promos, collecting music for him, compiling and editing Spotify playlists etc. It's quite fun.
I've been djing for 8 years, and since this September I'm resident in one of the best Hungarian nightclubs Tesla.
MOARRR: What's your opinion about the Hungarian scene of the moment? Something seems to got started...
VIKIPOP: Well we could talk about it for hours. Overall I think it's getting better and better. At least we finally have a few proper clubs and events, not only ruin bars. Sometimes I feel like I'm in Berlin, when I see the line-up of the events. Regarding the music, I’m really happy about the success of the Farbwechsel guys (Route 8, Imre Kiss, S Olbricht, Silf, Aiwa). This has been the greatest success for Hungarian electronic music for ages. Happy to see those guys playing in Panorama Bar and all over the world and their releases on Lobster Theremin are top notch.
MOARRR: Tell us about the concept of this mix...
VIKIPOP: The first 20 minutes are similar to my warm-up sets in clubs, the last 20 is like a late night session, and the middle part: well I wanted to include some of my favourites tunes from recent weeks. There are even four unreleased gems in the mix.
MOARRR: What's going on in Budapest in these days? Please recommend few art, cultural, music things for MOARRR readers who are visiting the city in these days.
VIKIPOP: Probably the best underground electronic music festival (UH) takes place this week in Budapest featuring Dean Blunt, Helena Hauff, Low Jack, Morphosis and we should definitely mention the Electronic Beats festival in mid-October with Omar Souleyman, Fatima, Nina Kraviz, Ame and Hercules + Love Affair headlining. Dj's like Fett Burger, Nick Höppner, Steffi, Juju and Jordash and Acid Pauli are coming to Budapest in the next few weeks, and there will be a few exciting non-electronic concerts in Budapest like Ariel Pink, The Cinematic Orchestra and Morissey.
MOARRR: Where can people see you next time?
VIKIPOP: Starting with the 10th of October at Tesla Budapest, we will be running a club night every two weeks, called Midnite Magic with my friends Waxman, and Gensi aka Add2Basket. We play quality house and disco all night long.
