BCS 4x03: Split diopter shots in “Something Beautiful.” – Viktor Herrmann
In the 70s, directors made frequent use of the split-focus diopter to have one plane in focus in one part of the picture (usually in the foreground) and a different plane in focus in the other half of the picture (the background). Brian DePalma had made such prolific use of this effect it’s nearly his signature.
