Eärendil the Mariner

Who deserves a pirate outfit more than Eärendil?

The background is largely inspired by one of Philip Sue's paintings. It was fun to draw a flat earth!

In other news, I love drawing ships but that was the worst angle possible to figure out. In my head, the Silmaril is at the prow in some kind of glass/mirror lantern that amplifies its light.

I wanted him to look soft, and little wry maybe, rather than fierce. I'm sure he's fierce aplenty but I mostly headcanon him as tired. His fate breaks my heart. Also, it doesn't really show here but my Eärendil is blind from overexposure to the Silmaril (and half-human fragile eyes).

I always waver between giving him locs or a shorter Mannish haircut, but his hair is really too kinky for the shoulder-length, Aragorn-style cut, so locs it is!

The art used for the Vingilot is from one of the Silmarillion's covers (I think it was a Chinese one but I wouldn't swear it - I still have the cover saved if anyone's interested)

No description or propaganda for the Vingilote. Feel free to provide some I could use if the ship makes it to another round.

Description for the Ulysses : Developed by Whitmore Industries, it is 382 Feet (116.434 meters) long, can go 18 knots, has 12 torpedo launchers in 6 external ball turrets which capable of firing explosive proximity torpedoes out of launchers that have 180 degrees of movement, and had a crew of 201 at launch! The bridge is located within a glass enclosure at the front of the ship so you can look out into the ocean like you are in an atrium. It's like an air craft carrier but a sub; it also housed 24 mini subpods and many other land terrain vehicles. It was eventually destroyed by a leviathan.

Propaganda for the Ulysses : I mean, see above. But also it just looks so iconic to the movie. Also, like, its HOW they even get to Atlantis at all soooooo

Eärendil wrapped an arm around Elladan and the other around Elrohir.

‘Gets a bit nippy up here,’ he said.

Elladan nodded. He watched Neptune slide past beneath the Vingilótë.

‘It’s a good thing I have company,’ Eärendil said. ‘You.’ He kissed Elladan’s temple. ‘And you.’ He kissed Elrohir’s temple. ‘And, of course, Roverandom.’

Roverandom’s tale wagged excitedly against the railing of the Vingilótë. His black ears perked up as Eärendil lifted him into his arms and held him close against his chest.

‘When he misses adventure,’ Eärendil said. ‘He comes to journey through the stars with me. He’s seen many things.’

‘And he’s so cute,’ Elladan said. He kissed Roverandom.

‘And he’s very cute,’ Eärendil agreed.

‘I am cute, thank you,’ said Roverandom.

And so they went on, past Neptune.

No, I will never stop doing these silly song covers. Yes, I was right, writing this did make me emotionally compromised.

Flying on the ship called Vingilotë,

Cusp of the sky, shadows, moon and stars,

The Silmaril and dozens of feathers and shells.

Rides our dream and only hope made of foam.

Elwing, wrested from our babes,

Waits for me on the shifting shore,

And of past beautiful days is all we think.

Morning on the ship called Vingilotë,

Raising my sails to bright Arien,

Nearly to Valinor, where I must stay,

Through the everlasting darkness,

Sailing over Ulmo’s sea.

And Beleriand’s people seem,

To be caught in a bad dream,

While Valinor has barely heard the news.

The birds sing their mournful song again,

And this mariner will sing along.

Vingilotë’s got the dying Middle Earth blues.
