Here are a few marbles I found in a drawer when it was time to clean out my parents house. There were originally dozens. Over the years we children had spent hours playing marble games. Our next door neighbor, a retired school teacher, taught us Marble Solitaire, (which we played on her even then antique wooden board) and Chinese Checkers, a game where marbles jump across a large star board much like checkers move from end to end of a square board. We also spent hours sitting on the floor in a circle that was filled with scattered marbles. We balanced our large "shooter" marble on our curved index finger and used our thumbs to launch the shooter into the center . The player who knocked the most marbles of of the circle was the winner.
This studio photograph is Mother's family. She is the blond girl on the left as you look at the picture. She looks about 12 which is the age she was when she won a contest and became the Children's Marble Shooting Champion of Akron Ohio. She was eventually disqualified however because she launched her marbles with her eyes closed.. It seemed unfair to us children who felt that her not being able to see the marbles in the circle in front of her sounded even more difficult than looking at what she was shooting at, but the decision of the judges was apparently final.
I never saw this picture until I was grown up. I am sure that part of the reason she tucked it away was that a couple of her own children (read me) went through some pretty unfortunate looking phases. Mother had always told us she had too, but if you look at this picture, I think you'll have to agree that in order to spare our feelings, she was probably exaggerating her own unattractiveness!
