Nirvana - Bleach • In 1989, three young men from Aberdeen, WA under the name Nirvana, fronted by punk rock Prophet Kurt Cobain, released their debut record 'Bleach' through Seattle top-dog label Sup Pop. Now, the Seattle music scene in 1989 was at a tipping point. For roughly five years or so prior, Seattle was a hive of musical activity, with bands forming on practically every block. This mid 80s Pacific Northwest incubation period saw the formation of Soundgarden, Mudhoney, and Alice in Chains, and also saw the creation of what is now known as "Grunge" music. Nirvana was an emerging band in this rapidly growing movement, and the release of 'Bleach' created momentum in the underground and College circuit, subsequently giving way to the Seattle music steam-roller, with Nirvana sitting high behind the wheel. • Grunge music is defined as a loose hybrid of punk rock and heavy metal music, though the term has been rejected by many of the bands it's used to define. Though perhaps a smothering blanket, this definition of Grunge is an accurate description of 'Bleach'. Slow, heavy, uncomfortably menacing, loose, and decisively negative, 'Bleach' leans more in the dark arts than the light. Cobain claimed to have written "roughly 80 percent" of the album's lyrical content the night before recording sessions took place, perhaps the best indicator of the angst-ridden Cobain at the time. Topics covered in the eleven tracks of 'Bleach' (thirteen on the reissue) include Cobain's ardent disdain of machoism ("Mr. Moustache", "Downer"), self-deprecation ("Negative Creep"), and rejection of authority ("School"). Though 'Bleach' failed to chart or sell well after its release, it received generous air-time on West Coast College radio stations, and received praise from critics. In only three years time, the Grunge scene would explode and ultimately define early 90s pop-culture with the release of Nirvana's second studio album 'Nevermind', backed by the major success of other Seattle bands, including Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains.
