I always love gimmicky records, and this 1986 UK 7” for Cyndi Lauper’s “Change of Heart” fits the bill nicely, but it needed some serious cleanup. It’s a rock-ier tune from that time for her and the b-side is a forgotten track from the Goonies soundtrack, so all in all, not a bad find.
It’s a 7” single in a full-color gatefold sleeve, but what makes it particularly (she’s) so unusual is the photo pinwheel inside the front of the gatefold. Spin it and you can change the photos seen inside die-cut heart shapes on the front (“Change of Heart,” get it?). Open the gatefold and the inside also uses the pinwheel, this time for more photos and some Cyndi Lauper trivia.
It’s an inexpensive $3 record but that doesn’t mean it should be mistreated. There was ink and caked dirt all over the sleeve, especially around her hair and face. Fortunately, it was a glossy cardstock, so I was able to take a white artist eraser and slowly but surely get most of it off. That $3 record is now worth at least $3.10!
