"SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS"

Recommended by George Mason to the Virginia Convention in 1776 the fledgling state adopted a seal declaring its opposition to tyranny. In 2019 when @theViBeCreativeDistrict hosted its second annual Virginia Beach mural festival local artist and graphic designer John Hutchinson, best known for his work for @17thStreetSurf Shop, worked with fellow artist @IgorCustom to created this reimagining of the seal on 17th Half St. “Both the emblem and motto seem as though they could not be more appropriate for this moment in our history" Hutchinson told @VirginianPilot saying he hope the image "will convey a sense of urgency in facing the most challenging issues of our times both on a local as well as a global level."  @hutchybaby/

"SOMETHING IN THE WATER"

For the last dozen years teens from Virginia's award-winning Hampton Roads Youth Poets have participated in @BraveNewVoices — the world's largest youth poetry slam — alongside hundreds of voices from across the nation and beyond. In 2019 New Orleans artist and activist Brandan Odums, aka BMike, traveled to Virginia Beach and collaborated with Teens With A Purpose ( @TWPTheMovement ) to paint this wall on Virginia Beach Blvd for the @SomethingIntheWater festival. BMike says as soon as he met these amazing young people he knew he had to paint them—the perfect complement to the amazing verse of the Hampton Roads Youth Poets.  @bmike2c/

"BOUNTIFUL"

"Just as I am a fusion of two extremely different cultures, my art is also a fusion of several opposing themes: war and beauty; pain and luxury; inner struggle and peace." Also influenced by "Japanese history, fashion, and tales of uncommon valor" Tokyo-born Juuri, now living in Oklahoma City, processes the delicate faces, flora, and other elements of her work through her Japanese American understanding of the world. In May, 2019 Juuri visited Virginia Beach and added this representative work at @Esoteric_VB in the @ViBeCreativeDistrict .  @juuriart83/

VIBE CREATIVE DISTRICT

Armed with a business degree and a job in a restaurant, Troy Summerell told @CoastalVAMag it was while refurbishing his broken surfboards that he began to develop his own art style. Adopting his artist moniker from his late grandmother Onie, nicknamed Tonie, OnieTonie opened a gallery in his hometown of Virginia Beach and created his first mural. That small seed helped provide impetus for the city's @TheViBeCreativeDistrict . OnieTonie has now covered entire city blocks with art simply designed to make people happy, and ViBe is now responsible for more than 100 public artworks. Completed in stages between 2017 and 2018 these OnieTonie walls cover @JavaSurfCafe at Mediterranean Ave and 19th St in Virginia Beach.  @onietonie/

@World_Wildlife Fund estimates that more than 8 million tons of plastic enter the ocean every year—resulting in an annual death toll of approximately 100,000 marine mammals and well over 1 million animals total when you include sea birds. While Connecticut artist ARCY is grateful to see measures being taken by numerous large corporations to reduce plastic use, he stopped off earlier this year at Virginia Beach Blvd and Baltic Ave in Virginia Beach's @TheViBeCreativeDistrict to paint this personal reminder. Known for his paint splashed murals, since 2015 ARCY has increasingly taken his work on the road often painting live event walls across North America as well as in Australia and Europe.  @arcyart/
