Abstraction Lecture 2
Now in my last lecture I feel that I expanded a little too much on the subject area and not referring enough to my work personally.
The subject concentrated on in this lecture is “Abstraction”. The idea of abstract is too separate or to withdraw from something and reducing something to it’s core. Finding an essence within and deconstructing, the subject. In my project as a group we are creating an abstract 3D model of our location of Digbeth. We are taking apart the game of monopoly apart and reconstructing it to our advantage. Researching the foundations of Digbeth and the progression of this area to reconstruct our own design.
In this talk we looked at artists such as, Gustav Klimt and his work of Beethoven Frieze. This piece of work is on display in Vienna, Austria this was in the movement of art nouveau. You have a main focus point, highlighted by the light hues of the bodies in the central image. The dark colour framing these subjects leading your eye in. His work being very illustrative, happy and childlike. The artwork reminds me of fashion illustration with the use of long flowing hair scoping their bodies. A lot of street art in Digbeth we found was of flowing hair and loose, flowing designs such as Klimt’s. Many designs being of characters of women on club buildings and also illustrations within a tunnel. All of these imagery have influenced our work deeply in recreating a Digbeth of our own design. Designing a cardboard city, towards a Monopoly board the objective to be undiscovered as a street artist.
Another Artist being, Alphonse Mucha an art nouveau artist who created poster designs, greatly influenced by Japanese art. This being early illustration and graphic design in the late 1800′s in 1896 he created a piece called “Summer” he created various forms of fantasy like prints, also pieces upon glass also. To communicate a fantasy like dreamland, in art and illustration we like to convey a sense of a dreamlike world which we live in. In Digbeth illustration is covered in every area and in the Custard Factory the bright hues bring a sense of happy vibes through the area. Bright colours signify bright moods and around this area there is a bustling vibe of culture. Reflecting this in our 3D project I am now creating bright hued buildings and characters to pop out of the boring cardboard scenery. Communicating the development of Digbeths Industrial estate to the bright and vibrant areas such as the Custard Factory.
