headcanon || nanako hasaba + room decor
girlhood can be broken up into two distinct periods: BEFORE && AFTER salvation. matters of self && individual identity are not taken into consideration until AFTER salvation ( because there's only so much room for self-expression behind wooden slats ); matters of self && individual identity are further complicated by the bonds ( && barriers ) of sisterhood.
nanako has always shared a room with her sister. she doesn't mind the lack of privacy. she sleeps better at night knowing that mimiko is within arm's reach && away from harm ( she's only a few minutes older && even so, she feels responsible for her ).
eventually, nanako feels secure enough to prettify her ( shared ) space. personal items no longer feel like contraband. she keeps a small collection of manga stacked on her bedside table, along with hair ties && candy wrappers. she accents her space with magazine clippings && pull-out posters ( idols, word art, weird imagery that catches her eye ). the curated clutter is a definitive contrast to her sister's side of the room, but mimiko voices no complaints.
on her twelfth birthday, nanako is gifted a polaroid camera && she begins to decorate her ( shared ) space with her own photographs ― cityscapes, selfies, food, && candid portraiture. her interest in photography crosses a threshold between hobby && lifestyle once tied to her cursed technique.
as she pushes further into adolescence, nanako becomes fixated on gyaru subculture && incorporates it into her aesthetic ― bright colours, animal print, patterned notebooks && accessories for each day of the week. geto-sama doesn't understand her fascination with ❛ monkey ❜ trends, but he doesn't discourage her. she's almost certain that mimiko doesn't understand either, but that's fine.
nanako doesn't need to be understood, she just wants to be SEEN; she wants to be perceived as an individual ( however flashy && outlandish ) && not as an extension of another.
