Visovac Monastery, Croatia (by Eric)
Visovac Monastery, National Park Krka in Brištane, Croatia.
The little church on the island by Anna Gorin Via Flickr: There is something so very winning about a tiny church on a tiny island in the middle of nowhere. When I first saw pictures of Visovac Monastery while researching Croatia, I thought it must have been filed under the wrong country, because I hadn't seen anything about it before and it looked like it belonged in another region entirely! But no, Visovac is within the Krka National Park region, just not by the waterfalls for which the park is better known. Small wonder not as many people go here, though - some of the roads are a bit intense! (And peppered with signs for wild boar, which I find both terrific and terrifying.) Pro tip, if coming up the west shore of the lake, don't be misled by the signs pointing to Visovac on that side. The view is not good at all and the road is very narrow with hardly any room to turn around at the end. The east side overlook from the top of the hill is much better, and if you get there at a reasonable hour (unlike me!), you can even catch the ferry out to the island.
