Visual Mind
I’ve been learning so many new things lately.
About a week ago, I was listening to Temple Grandin speak and she mentioned that she thought in pictures. The way she describes her mind is very relatable. She says “My mind works similar to an Internet search engine, set to locate photos. “
I was like “yeah that sounds right”. That is how I think. I honestly thought all people thought that way. I did not know people didn’t think in pictures until I asked some other people and some said that they don’t think in pictures. Lol
A friend of mine was actually really surprised that I thought in photographs/videos/movies. I was just as surprised when she was telling me that she doesn’t think that way.
My mind is so vivid. I love it because I can imagine whatever the hell I want. I can make a movie featuring me and whoever just like that. Even when I listen to music, I have a very vivid and realistic music video going in my head. When people are talking to me I am visualizing what they are saying.
Sometimes having a visual mind can be scary too because you can visualize the things that you don’t want to. For example I have a huge fear of a certain insect and my friends in high school thought this was funny. They would send me photos of that particular insect or they would mention it or pretend that their hand was that insect and make the crawling motion on my skin. This was not funny for me. I hated having those images in my head. Those images would linger. I would try to block it out and think of other photos or just something, but that usually didn’t work.
Anyway, I have really enjoyed learning these things and learning about how my mind works. I’ve been looking at other people’s experiences that are like my own to see how they verbalize their experiences. I have a hard time verbalizing my thoughts and feelings. That sucks a lot, but I am working on it.
