Selenium & Hashimoto's thyroiditis
Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) In areas with severe selenium deficiency higher incidence of thyroiditis has been reported due to a decreased activity of selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase enzyme within thyroid cells." (A.K. Bhuyan et al. 2012) In Hashimoto's thyroiditis, several studies found selenium supplementation was associated with a decrease in thyroid peroxidase(TPO) autoantibodies. (Bhuyan et al. 2012, Zhu et al. 2012) A study of children with newly diagnosed euthyroid Hashimoto's thyroiditis found while selenium supplementation was not associated with a decrease in autoantibodies, it was associated with a decrease in thyroid volume, another sign of being beneficial. (Onal et al. 2012). "It would be of interest to determine whether early treatment with selenium in patients with newly developed autoimmune thyroiditis may delay or even prevent the natural course of these diseases." (Bhuyan et al. 2012) Three things to keep in mind: While. 52 patients had decreased levels of anti-TPO after supplementation, 25 patients had no change or increased levels. ( Zhu et al. 2012) While the rise in autoantibodies is possibly due to an inability to stop the progression of an ongoing autoimmune disease, it is something to weigh when talking to your doctor about about whether or not to try selenium. According to some studies selenium may increase the risk of diabetes. “Selenium is an essential micronutrient that has a narrow exposure window between its beneficial and toxic effects.” (Li et al. 2013) References & links Bhuyan, A. What are the Side Effects of Vitamin E Overdose ?
In November, 2004, the American Heart Association stated that high amounts of vitamin E can be harmful. Taking 400 IU per day, or higher, may increase the risk of death.
Taking smaller amounts, such as those found in a typical multivitamin, was not harmful.
High doses have also been reported to cause (or may theoretically cause) the following vitamin E side effects:
* Nausea * Diarrhea * Intestinal cramping * Fatigue and weakness * Headaches * Blurred vision * Any unusual bruising or bleeding (vitamin E can increase the risk of bleeding)
* Signs of gastrointestinal bleeding, such as: o Black, tarry stools o Bright-red blood in the stool o Vomiting of blood
* Signs of a hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding in the brain), such as: o Vision or speech changes o Weakness or numbness in an arm or leg o Severe headache.
Some people may experience irritation or allergic reactions when vitamin E is applied to the skin.
