"Hiei has 18 belts"- Togashi

Q. What kind of youkai was Hiei before he implanted the "evil eye"? Moreover, he wears two or four belts, does he care about being fashionable? (Kaoru Adachi, Fukushima Prefecture) 

A. This question was answered directly by Togashi-sensei.  Read on! 

"Before Hiei implanted the evil eye ... it is a secret for the time being. But, it will be revealed in the series currently being serialized in the Weekly Jump magazine.  

And, Hiei has about 18 belts. He only has that amount of clothes though (laughs). This also means he's fashionable, right?"

I can't wait to see what Hiei's true identity (?) is. Even so, I never would've thought he would only have 18 belts... 

T/N: LOL, Togashi is so random, how did he come up with the number 18? Poor Hiei, he only owns 18 belts➰, what about other clothes? He always wears the same pants? Does he keep his 18 belts on the tree? 🤣 I think the belts show that he cares about his appearance. Look how cool he looks like! I really like his scarf as well. He always takes if off before going to battle, seems like an important scarf to him.

BTW, this question was answered in 1993, when the Black Chapter series was being serialized in WSJ. Togashi revealed more about Hiei's past in 1994. It's interesting that people used to send questions about his past and the belts. I wish he had answered more curiosities.
