I cried while watching Missy Elliott’s vma performance. It meant so much to me. I remember being 7 years old in summer camp krumping my little heart out to “Lose Control.” I had her whole Cookbook album and listened to it daily on my CD player. I used to sing “One Minute Man” thinking she was talking about Minute Maid the orange juice. I thought, “She’s black, I’m black, she’s a girl, I’m a girl, and we both don’t like orange juice?? We have so much in common. She probably drinks it after brushing her teeth.” Then my sister told me stop singing it because it’s for adults, lol.

She really inspired me to dance, her and her excellent background dancers. I love how she acknowledges dancers as people and not just props or accessories to performances and videos. She’s never been too famous to interact with us. She even retweeted my friend’s dance video to “Pass That Dutch!” All of those charismatic, full-out, beautiful, black dancers (plus Alyson Stoner 😂) make me wanna dance full time lmao. Her awards are way overdue. I wish the performance was longer. Also,

I’m going to meet her one day.
