Is there some sort of stigma associated with being a mezzo soprano I should know about? I'm kind of a beginner and my range is E3-A5, which is mezzo right? I've been working on building it (it was originally somewhere like G3-G5) and I was sort of proud of that growth, but I feel like I might be confused. I've seen a lot of negativity associated with mezzos lately. Should I try to focus on becoming either more alto or soprano? Or am I worrying over nothing?
It’s just so stupid. There’s this ridiculous idea that permeates much that the higher you can sing, the better you are. And that people who are altos, are just altos because they aren’t good enough to be sopranos. But this idea is completely and utterly false. And it only serves to make people feel bad because of their natural, hereditary vocal chord structure. People can sing a certain range for a reason. Singing a high C makes you no better than any other singer. You continue to grow into your own voice, and don’t let anybody make you feel like it’s inadequate in any way. You are wonderful and perfect as you are, and mezzos frickin’ rock.
so today my choir teacher told me that my range is a E flat 5 (highest) to a C 3 (lowest). what does this mean in terms of being a soprano/alto? I'm pretty sure it's alto but I'm not 100% as I'm clueless about sheet music and notes. Also because of that, how do I tell if a role is in my range or not based on that? Thanks so much!!
I would guess that you’re probably an alto or mezzo, though vocal typing is dependent on much more than just your vocal range. So it’s really impossible for me to say without working with you! Check out this post and you can see what roles your range fits within!
I'm sorry if this is stupid but what is a counter tenor?
It is a vocal type--the highest male vocal type, and quite rare! Here’s an article that goes more in-depth!
How do you feel about counter tenors? I have a very nice counter tenor voice but I'm kinda nervous to prove it in front of anyone but my director in fear of being made fun of.
It’s definitely a rare vocal type, so people may be a bit confused when they hear you. But you are wonderful and unique and should definitely embrace your uncommon vocal type! I know I personally would love to hear you sing if I was a director, because you’d be an incredible change of pace and so unique!
