The VoiceZam Story VoiceZam is leading the business of voice-overs further into the digital age. But its beginnings are rooted in the inspiring personal journey of VoiceZam’s visionary founder – Bob Merkel. It’s a journey that shows a rare and winning combination of creativity and discipline. While theatre and communications kept his interest in the early-going at the University of Wisconsin, Bob took that flair for performance, and brought it to the field of software engineering, where he moved into a position as senior software engineer by the mid ‘80s. Not long after, a friend at church saw Bob’s unique combination of skills and invited him to be a creative director of his advertising agency. Back into the stimulating milieu of advertising, Bob thrived as he directed film, developed ideas with writers, and handled production projects. He may not have realized it then, but Bob was sowing the seeds of VoiceZam. “I did a lot of work with writers to match voiceovers for broadcast scripts," says Bob. "At that time, there would be several demos on the cassette, with seven or eight different reads (or clips), per demo." As the producer, Bob had to specifically match the voice to the project, and its target audience. But this tedious task of discovering the right voice quickly became frustrating; needlessly so, in Bob’s mind. The process meant picking a cassette, trusting that you would come across a talent’s voice that fit the current project, and usually settling for “good”… not “great”. "You'd be staring at a tape rack, with only talent the names as a guide to select" Bob says. “We’re talking hundreds of tapes sent in from talent hoping to score a job." After considerable attention to the task, Bob’s innovative right/left brain came up with a categorized database of voices. It was workable, but eventually that process spawned a new project. The internet was coming of age, and Bob's idea was to take this database concept and put a version of it online to make it easier for producers to find talent. "I spent 3 month, designing and coding a prototype. Then, armed with my laptop and little portable speakers, I demonstrated the system to different agency producers in Chicago. It showed them a totally new way to find talent - they loved it," says Bob. "Unfortunately, I then looked at the startup costs and had to let the dream go." Later, with newfound time and money, Bob hired a development company while remaining the chief architect. In 2003, VoiceZam came to life, with a patent for the technology issued in 2008. Today, VoiceZam is approaching its fourth version release, based on HTML5, making it completely platform independent. With VoiceZam, a voiceover talent finally has a proven tool that ensures producers hear every read within their demos. Bob continues to make improvements with VoiceZam, eliminating the barriers in the demo-listening process and finding new ways to help voiceover talent find success in their own businesses. "My hope is that VoiceZam continues to pump new life into voiceover talent’s careers—because a quality demo is still the most critical marketing tool in the voiceover profession.” he says.
Anne Ganguzza is the President and Founder of VO Peeps, and has an undeniable passion for voiceover and sharing her knowledge with others. This led her to a full time career in VO and inspired her to form a local meetup group for voice over artists originally known as the Orange County VO Peeps. The group gained in popularity quickly, and with it’s online presence, attracted attention from others around the globe. Realizing the tremendous advantages of sharing and disseminating information and resources globally, and effectively “breaking down” the traditional barriers of local meetup groups, the organization began extending its memberships to the online community. They have since dropped the “locale” portion of their moniker, and are now known simply as - VO Peeps.
As a voice over artist, her voice is described as professional, believable, warm, and friendly. Her experience includes voices for corporate narration, E-learning, IVR/On Hold Systems, medical narration, commercials, infomercials, Audio Books, Live Theatre Broadcasts, and more. She has many years experience in public speaking and over 20 years experience in corporate and educational training, and is an exceptionally clear and concise technical speaker – able to make those difficult scripts easy to understand!
