A Week at Farm Sanctuary: Introductions
This week at Farm Sanctuary was all about introductions for the residents of our New York and California Shelters.
Last month, we shared the exciting news that Von D and Junip Sydney piglets of our Southern California Shelter met for the first time, and quickly became the best of friends. Now that they are bigger, we recently moved them to the main pig area, where they were introduced to our veteran porcine residents.
Von D and Junip found a sweet spot to spoon near new bedfellow Jimmy.
As you can see, Junip and Von D are loving their new digs – especially their state-of-the-art wallowing pond!
No more practice pools for these two expert wallowers!
Aaahhh. There’s nothing like a dip in the pond on a warm afternoon.
Safran steer investigates the scene as Junip sets foot on her new, shared turf.
Welcome to the world, little one!
Meanwhile, at our New York Shelter, the eagle-eyed viewers and camera operators from Explore.org captured a beautiful doe with her tiny newborn fawn.

Wild deer are commonplace at our New York Shelter, and we love catching glimpses of them whenever we can. As you can see, it’s easy for them to come and go as they please!
Meet our Newest Rescued Residents!
This week, we also introduced you to the six cattle rescued from a horrific cruelty case in Chester County, PA.
They are still recovering from their terrible ordeal, but in the short time we’ve known them, they are already revealing so much about their unique and special personalities!
Thank you for honoring these new beginnings and for celebrating the animals of Farm Sanctuary, who stand as ambassadors for their species. Together, we can encourage awareness and understanding about such unique individuals. With your support we can continue to promote compassionate vegan living through rescue, education, and advocacy efforts. A compassionate world begins with you!

New Friends: Junip Sydney and Von D Piglets Meet at Farm Sanctuary!
We recently introduced you to Junip Sydney and Von D piglets, and just as we hoped, the two have become the very best of pig pals. Watch as they meet for the very first time, then learn about the social lives of our pig friends!
Von D: Von Fabulous!
Today, we’re celebrating the birthday of an inspiring and tireless animal advocate, Kat Von D (who, true to form, is generously spending her special day volunteering at Farm Sanctuary!). And like the incredible “humanimal” who inspired her name, Von D piglet has a lot to celebrate.
Von D is the newest rescued pig at our Southern California Shelter, and she is quite the talker! This little oinker just can’t stop talking about how excited she is to be at Farm Sanctuary — and who could blame her?
Von D was born at an illegal backyard butcher operation in Southern California. When she was about a month old, the “farmer’s” nephew and his wife visited and met Von D. The wife could not accept that this sweet piglet’s fate was to be brutally killed by her husband’s uncle in just a few short months. To keep her from meeting this awful end, the wife begged the uncle to allow the couple to take Von D home and raise her as their pet, and the uncle reluctantly agreed.
So Von D went from backyard butcher to backyard pet. Her kindhearted rescuers welcomed the small piglet into their lives gleefully and naively. For starters, their home was not zoned for pigs, meaning that they could be forced to surrender her to the local animal control agency if it learned of her existence. And animal control learning of the piglet’s existence seemed inevitable in this suburban neighborhood where neighbors were packed in closely to each other. Pigs are noisy — and that’s especially true of Von D!
