Vorik was never a particularly promising student. He loved his twin and they had an eapecially strong twin-bond which lead to them pursuing careers in Star Fleet together, but when Taurik graduated near the top of their class and Vorik graduated near the bottom, being separated was inevitable. That separation was then made into something even more extreme when Vorik, stationed on the USS Voyager, was flung into another quadrant of the galaxy.
Cut off by extreme distance from all of his familial bonds and his bondmate, Vorik was left reeling. He clung to logic like a liferaft, but that couldn't fix his enormous psychological distress. He did competent work, but he remained fairly isolated on on the ship, and even moreso when his biology combined with his lack of mental stability and ignorance resulted in him sexually assaulting his superior officer. Guilt clung to him for years after, even after their return to the alpha quadrant, and he took a position on utopia planetia to provide himself with more stability and consistency.
