W.S. Burroughs
“I was standing outside myself trying to stop those hangings with ghost fingers… I am a ghost wanting what every ghost wants–a body–after the Long Time moving through odorless alleys of space where no life is, only the colorless no smell of death… Nobody can breathe and smell it through pink convolution of gristle laced with crystal snot, time shit and black blood filters of flesh.
He stood there… his face torn like a broken film by lusts and hungers of larval organs stirring in the tentative ectoplasmic flesh of junk kick… flesh that fades at the first silent touch of junk.
I saw it happen. Ten pounds lost in ten minutes standing with the syringe in one hand holding his pants up with the other, his abdicated flesh burning in a cold yellow halo… [N]ight table litter of candy boxes, cigarette butts cascading out of three ashtrays, mosaic of sleepless nights and sudden food needs of the kicking addict nursing his baby flesh…
[He]… winds up in a Federal Nut House specially designed for the containment of ghosts: precise, prosaic impact of objects… washstand… door… toilet… bars… there they are… this is it… all the lines cut… nothing beyond… Dead End… And the Dead End in every face…
The physical changes were slow at first, then jumped forward in black klunks, falling through his slack tissue, washing away the human lines… In his place of total darkness mouth and eyes are one organ that leaps forward to snap with transparent teeth… but no organ is constant as regards either function or position… sex organs sprout anywhere… rectums open, defecate and close… the entire organism changes color and consistency in split-second adjustments…

“Last night I read a W.S. Burroughs essay where he talked about "walking on color lines" (focusing on certain colors around you.) On my mental health walk this afternoon I picked red and found a DPRK flag on a building across from a mall in Cambridge.”
“Another exercise that is very effective is walking on colors. Pick out all the reds on a street, focusing only on red objects–brick, lights, sweaters, signs. Shift to green, blue, orange, yellow. Notice how the colors begin to stand out more sharply of their own accord. I was walking on yellow when I saw a yellow amphibious jeep near the corner of 94th Street and Central Park West. It was called the Thing. This reminded me of the Thing I knew in Mexico. He was nearly seven feet tall and had played the Thing in a horror movie of the same name, and everybody called him the Thing, though his name was James Arness. I hadn’t thought about the Thing in twenty years, and would not have thought about him except walking on yellow at that particular moment.”
“For example, I was taking a color walk around Paris the other day…doing something I picked up from your pictures in which the colors shoot out all through the canvas like they do in the street. I was walking town the boulevard when I suddenly felt this cool wind on a warm day and when I looked out all through the canvas like they do in the street. I was walking down the boulevard when I looked out I was seeing all the blues in the street in front of me, blue on a foulard…blue on a young workman’s ass…his blue jeans…a girl’s blue sweater…blue neon…the sky…all the blues. When I looked again I saw nothing but all the reds of traffic lights…car lights…a café sign…a man’s nose. Your paintings make me see the streets of Paris in a different way. And then there are all the deserts and the Mayan masks and the fantastic aerial architecture of your bridges and catwalks and Ferris wheels.”
