if he were in the modern world, he’d be a doctor, a loud-mouthed, hella strong doctor, a doctor you’d think would be better off a wrestler (turns out, he did try to be a wrestler but he realized it was all staged and he found that boring af!)
but he’s a good doctor. he makes crying kids stop crying with his physical comedy (the other doctors and nurses find it disgusting but hey! the kids like it!). he makes hurt women feel safe against the men who hurt them. he makes weak men want to become stronger and be more righteous. more importantly, he makes them all want to help others
anyway, once a patient came in (a veteran with PTSD) who shocks the nurses by trying to hurt themself (or someone else rlly), Garp springs into action and, shocking everyone even more, disarms the veteran without hurting them. later, the other doctors then ask Garp how he was able to do that. like sure they once had a seminar for deescalation tactics but rlly? that quick? then, briefly, very briefly, he mentions how he was in the army once but that he later found out it wasn’t for him
of course everyone is shocked, so they think, was he an army doctor? no, he says, he was an officer, and then he leaves to do something, leaving them to wonder, what they don’t know is that his family is in the bad business, drugs, trafficking, and unable to take it anymore, he busted them up. for his protection, he went into the army of another country
as a soldier, he had killed people and it left a bad taste in his mouth, but instead of sucking it up and carrying on, like he usually would, especially back with his family, he decided to go into the medical field, it shocked his commanding officer but the man was talented and he said if he couldn’t go into it here, he’d leave the army and he couldn’t have that, so he let him train
and what would you know? he was good at that too! even better than he was at being a soldier actually. it’s like the man was made to stitch up wounds, stop blood from spilling, and carry people to safety, and yes, all the people he carried to safety lived, which is why he got the epithet of “The Soldier with Angel Wings” or “Angel-Man” for short (bec angels were obv not hulking masses of muscles like him, add to that his scarred face)
he wasn’t exactly angelic looking. but the name stuck. as a soldier, he followed the rules and bowed to authority but as a doctor? no, he does what he wants when he wants, but you bet he’ll save a life if a person comes knocking on his door crying for help, no matter if they were a criminal or not, and he takes the time to listen to criminals and their life stories, but he doesn’t try to steer them to good, no, like himself, he tells them to choose what kinda life they want to live and do that, then he gets up and leaves

anyway, i just think, personally, Garp deserves better. he's got a good heart and the strength to boot (bad guys outta here) but for some goddamn reason, the fandom seems to think he's a fucking abuser?! i mean, sure he hits them but he literally hits everyone?! almost everyone at least. i don't think he ever hit Makino tho. so maybe he hits the unruly ones to behave??? and he did let Ace die, which i'm mad af abt but... i imagine he was all torn up abt it on the inside too. but he's got a job to do and a role to play, so he keeps going. idk, he just tickles my brain a certain way
