Gouache variant. I didn’t go crazy here and made just one version using this technique :) It was a bit easier for me to control the paint, to make the gradient smoother and add highlights at the end of the process and also because gouache is an opaque paint it’s more forgiving for correcting potential errors. What I didn’t like about this paint is the fact that it reactivates rather easily. I’m sure there’s a way around it or maybe to avoid doing it… a discovery to happen :) I think in the future I’ll go back and explore gouaches more. Starting the presentation with four, FOUR!!! watercolour (or watercolor?) pieces (1,3,4 on Fabriano Artistico Hot Pressed 100% cotton and nr3 on Arches Cold Press paper :) As mentioned in a previous post I based this exercise on Robert Romanowicz acrylic painting portraying a Bee. I explored different watercolour techniques here: wet on wet, wet on dry, layered, with and without outlines, etc. All of them started as pencil sketches and then… Nr 1. I traced the bee outline in acrylic inks, which gave me a comic book look from the get go. Wing highlights are made with acrylic paint. Nr 2. Goal was to create smooth gradients on the bee’s body. At the end I finished with adding a bit of watercolour pencils on top of dry painting. Nr 3. Wet on wet technique with smooth gradients and patchy background. Nr 4. Is actually the first picture I made. Turned out quite OK. Some people like the patchiness on the body. I used masking fluid here to protect the whiteness of the paper on eyes, wings and antennae highlights. I’m not the biggest fan of this paper, it’s not bad at all but I reckon I prefer cold press type of paper. As some of you know in my spare time I’m trying to get back to “roots” meaning - traditional painting. I started experimenting some time ago and when I looked online and saw plenty of amazing artists creating magical pieces in watercolours, acrylics and gouache… and I was lost… so many mediums to choose from. I wasn’t sure which technique was right for me. So I decided to try them all! (surely not all of them, really, but something in between none and all ;) ) I started with watercolours, then watercolours again, then more watercolours with different approach, then watercolour and ink, later I took on gouache, acryl… man, that was a lot of painting going on :) As a subject I selected one of @RobertRomanowicz paintings portraying A BEE and not being exact with copying I tried to recreate the same subject. In the next couple of days I’ll be posting results of this experiment with my thoughts on pros and cons of each technique.
